Two days of memory, music, and anti-fascism at Casa Giubileo
The Montemaggio Resistance Festival takes place at Casa Giubileo, on the Montemaggio hill, within the territory of Monteriggioni, in the province of Siena, in the heart of Tuscany. This is no ordinary place: on March 28, 1944, nineteen partisans were executed here by fascists in what is remembered as one of the most tragic massacres of partisan fighters in Tuscany. From this memory, a festival was born in 2014 that transforms the hill every year into a space for meeting, reflection, and popular celebration.
Promoted by ANPI Valdelsa, the festival follows a precise formula: bridging the past and the present. On one hand, it focuses on the commemoration and preservation of Resistance sites; on the other, it offers a contemporary interpretation of anti-fascism, explored through an intersectional lens and aimed at the future. It is an event that speaks as much to historians and witnesses as it does to new generations of activists, associations, and movements.
Admission to all activities is free. A bar and a sandwich stand are available on-site for both days, while the "alla macchia" lunch is available by reservation. The school competition "From Montemaggio to the Constitution" involves local schools every year, strengthening the bond between memory and citizenship. An event that, among the woods of the Sienese Valdelsa, has become a reference point for those who wish to combine culture, music, and civic commitment.
The thirteenth edition of the Montemaggio Resistance Festival offered two dense days dedicated to memory and contemporary commitment at Casa Giubileo. The common thread was an intersectional anti-fascism capable of uniting diverse communities against authoritarian trends, with the central moment being the Great Anti-Fascist Assembly on Sunday afternoon. The poster illustration was created by Irene Raspollini.
For both days: children's entertainment by Radia APS and Bosco Fuoritempo, bar and sandwich stands. Guests at workshops and meetings included: Francesco Filippi, Andrea Sestante, Pietro Centorrino, Donne Insieme Valdelsa, and the No Base collective (Pisa/Pontedera).
Casa Giubileo is located on Montemaggio, in the municipality of Monteriggioni (SI). By car, it can be reached via the SS2 Cassia road, following signs for Montemaggio; the festival usually provides signage and dedicated parking during the event days.
Admission is free to all activities. A bar and sandwich stands are available on-site on both days. The "alla macchia" lunch requires a reservation, as do the workshops with limited capacity.
For the partisan trekking, comfortable shoes and water are recommended. For workshops and lunch, it is advisable to register in advance via the festival's social media channels and official website.
