About Monte Camoscio Mountain Festival

Every spring, Monte Camoscio, Baveno’s home mountain, comes alive for the traditional Mountain Festival organized by the A.N.A. Intra group. Two simple, convivial days are held around the Rifugio papà Amilcare at an altitude of 890 meters, featuring a spaghetti dinner under the stars on Saturday, Holy Mass at the Cross on Sunday, and lunch with Alpine cuisine. It is a local gathering that brings together the Alpini, residents, tourists, and vacationers, all rewarded at the summit with a splendid panorama of the Borromean Gulf and the surrounding peaks.

A local festival on the mountain of Baveno

The Monte Camoscio Mountain Festival is one of the most cherished spring events in Baveno, on Lake Maggiore, in the province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola (Piedmont). It is organized by the A.N.A. Baveno Intra Group, the local Alpini, who invite friends, supporters, tourists, and vacationers every year to climb their home mountain for two days of open-air conviviality.

Monte Camoscio and Rifugio papà Amilcare

Monte Camoscio (890 meters) is the peak that dominates Baveno and the Borromean Gulf. For centuries, the famous Baveno pink granite has been extracted from its slopes, used for illustrious works such as the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in Milan. Just below the summit, marked by a large Cross, stands the Rifugio papà Amilcare, managed by the Alpini: this is where the festival takes place. Once at the top, the view stretches over Lake Maggiore, the Borromean Islands, and, on the clearest days, as far as Monte Rosa and the Swiss peaks.

Two days of Alpine tradition and good food

The event takes place over a weekend. Saturday evening opens with the famous spaghetti dinner under the stars offered by the Alpini, an informal and beloved moment to gather at altitude as night falls. Sunday is dedicated to the more traditional aspects: Holy Mass at the Cross in memory of the fallen and the Alpini who have passed on, followed by a hearty meal with a well-stocked bar and Alpine cuisine open to all.

Who is it for?

  • Families looking for a simple mountain excursion just a stone's throw from the lake
  • Hikers climbing on foot from Baveno along the Camoscio trails
  • Those who want to experience the authentic hospitality of the Alpini and the flavors of mountain cuisine

Please note that during the festival, the road in the Cantonaccio area usually remains closed due to safety concerns: it is advisable to check access routes before setting off.

A celebration of identity

More than just a major event, the Mountain Festival is a community ritual that tells the story of the bond between Baveno and its mountain. It is an opportunity to rediscover the Camoscio trails, enjoy one of the most beautiful panoramas in the Verbano region, and share a day of celebration in the simple and generous spirit of the Piedmontese Alpini.
