About Montalto Marina Carnival

The Montalto Marina Carnival brings vibrant floats, masked groups, music, and confetti to the streets of this seaside district in Montalto di Castro, Viterbo province. It is a whirlwind of color designed for families and anyone eager to dress up and let their imagination run wild, set against the unique backdrop of the Tyrrhenian coast in Tuscia—far from the summer crowds, when the town fills with winter cheer.

A Carnival that reaches the sea

In Montalto Marina, the Carnival is more than just a fleeting moment of joy: it is the time when the seaside district of Montalto di Castro, in the heart of the Maremma Laziale, comes alive out of season. Allegorical floats and masked groups parade through the streets in a swirl of music and color, while the promenade, usually quiet in February, becomes the natural stage for a popular festival enjoyed by families, children, and local associations.

Where it takes place

The meeting point and starting line for the procession is Piazzale dei Pescatori, overlooking the tourist port of Montalto Marina. From there, the floats head into the town, followed by masked groups and anyone who shows up in costume—no registration required. The route is entirely flat and pedestrian-friendly, making it easy to navigate with strollers or for those with limited mobility.

A Carnival spread across the municipality

The unique feature of this event is that it is not limited to a single day or location: the float parades alternate between the main town of Montalto di Castro, starting from Piazza Carlo Alberto dalla Chiesa, and the marina. This allows the municipality to involve both communities and extend the festivities beyond the traditional Carnival calendar, often with events scheduled even after Shrove Tuesday.

The floats: months of craftsmanship

  • Handcrafted construction: The floats are built by local groups and associations who spend weeks in workshops working with papier-mâché, polystyrene, and mobile structures.
  • Satirical and popular themes: True to Italian Carnival tradition, subjects range from political satire to fairy tale characters and cartoons, perfect for younger audiences.
  • Masked groups: Dozens of costumed participants march alongside the floats, often color-coordinated, with music playing from sound systems mounted on trailers.

The setting: Montalto di Castro and Tuscia

Located in the province of Viterbo, in northern Lazio, the municipality blends an agricultural and pastoral hinterland with a long, sandy coastline. Just a few kilometers away lies the archaeological site of Vulci, one of the most important Etruscan cities, featuring a nature park and the famous Devil's Bridge. The Carnival is a key part of the community's annual calendar of local festivals, from summer food fairs to patron saint celebrations, and remains one of the few times the marina comes back to life during the winter.

Who it is for

This is a free, open-air, and deeply family-oriented festival: there are no grandstands or tickets; you watch from the street and join the procession whenever you like. Visitors from out of town can combine the day with a walk along the promenade or a gastronomic stop at the port restaurants, where fresh fish remains the specialty even in the low season.

Montalto Marina Carnival — edition 2026

The third event of the 2026 Carnival in the Montalto di Castro area: on Sunday, February 22, the festivities moved to Montalto Marina, starting from Piazzale dei Pescatori at 3:00 PM. Allegorical floats and masked groups paraded through the streets in a whirlwind of music and color, with everyone invited to dress up and join the procession. Free admission.

The 2026 Edition

The third event, on Sunday, February 22, 2026, featured Montalto Marina, confirming the formula of a widespread Carnival that extends the party beyond the traditional calendar.

The meeting point was set at Piazzale dei Pescatori, at the port, with the procession starting at 3:00 PM. From there, allegorical floats and masked groups traveled through the streets accompanied by music, in a day designed especially for children and local families.
