About Mondragone Carnival

The Mondragone Carnival is the premier street festival of the Domitian coast: allegorical floats, costumed groups, confetti, and music fill the streets of Mondragone, in the province of Caserta. Built from the ground up by local associations, parishes, and volunteers, the event draws families and children from across the Caserta coastline. It is a free, popular celebration that, in its 2026 edition, filled the city streets with color, music, and smiles.

The Carnival of the Domitian Coast

The Mondragone Carnival is the most colorful winter event in Mondragone, a coastal city on the Domitian Riviera in the province of Caserta, Campania. During the main days of the Carnival—Carnival Sunday and Shrove Tuesday—the town center comes alive with allegorical floats, costumed groups, confetti, and music, in a street festival that involves the entire community and neighboring coastal towns.

The Allegorical Float Parade

The heart of the event is the float parade, built in the weeks leading up to the festival by groups of volunteers and local associations. The floats travel slowly through the main streets of the city, accompanied by masked children and teenagers, music, and entertainment, with crowds following the procession on foot. Past editions have featured shows, games, mascots, live music, and guest performers, with entertainment specifically designed for families.

A Grassroots Celebration

The Mondragone Carnival is promoted by the municipal administration and brought to life through the hard work of associations, volunteer groups, and local parishes. When the event was relaunched by the Municipality in 2018 after a decade-long hiatus, the parade featured five floats, a marching band, and the direct participation of local parishes, which serve as the city's primary youth hubs. Since then, the Carnival has reclaimed its role as a defining moment for Mondragone: a festival born in the neighborhoods, in the garages where the float structures are assembled, and in improvised workshops where costumes are sewn.

An Event for Families and Children

The formula is that of a genuine Southern Italian folk festival: free admission, streets closed to traffic along the route, confetti and streamers everywhere, loud music from the floats, and a crowd largely made up of families. For children, it is often the first opportunity of the year to show off their Carnival costumes, while for adults, the parade represents a moment of community gathering, especially in a city that relies on seasonal tourism and rediscovers its public squares during the winter.

Mondragone, Between Mount Petrino and the Sea

With over twenty-five thousand inhabitants, Mondragone is one of the most populous centers on the Caserta coast: facing the long sandy beaches of the Gulf of Gaeta, with the slopes of Mount Petrino behind it, and a city center that revolves around the sanctuary of Maria Santissima Incaldana, the heart of local devotion. The city calendar is marked by well-attended festivals—from the summer patronal feast to local food festivals—and the Carnival serves as the winter opening, the first major community gathering of the year.

When It Takes Place

The dates follow the mobile Carnival calendar each year, with float parades concentrated on Carnival Sunday and Shrove Tuesday. In 2026, the festival took place on Sunday, February 15, and Tuesday, February 17, with participation described by the organizers as extraordinary. Routes and schedules are announced by the organizers in the days immediately preceding the event via the Municipality of Mondragone's channels and local press.
