The parades of allegorical floats in the heart of the Bassa bolognese
The Molinella Carnival is one of the longest-running popular events in the Bolognese plain. Born in the 1950s, it has grown to become an eagerly awaited event for the entire community of the Municipality of Molinella, in the metropolitan city of Bologna, Emilia-Romagna. Its peculiarity is the itinerant formula: instead of concentrating in a single square, the parades move from Sunday to Sunday between the town center and its hamlets, involving Marmorta, San Martino in Argine, and San Pietro Capofiume in rotation.
The absolute protagonists are the allegorical floats, built during the winter by local associations and groups. Colorful, satirical, and imaginative structures parade accompanied by music, dancing, confetti, and masks, in a festive atmosphere that involves both adults and children. Along the routes, there are also food stalls with typical Carnival sweets and specialties, and entertainment areas dedicated to children.
The distribution of the parades across different locations is what truly makes this Carnival special: each hamlet experiences its own day of celebration, enhancing the identity of the local community. The events in San Pietro Capofiume, in the Alberino area, often take the form of a more static festival, with stands and entertainment around the square.
With free admission, the Molinella Carnival is designed primarily for families and for those who want to rediscover the authentic flavor of Emilian village festivals. The organization is handled by the Pro Loco of Molinella in collaboration with the Municipality and the numerous local associations, the true driving force behind a tradition that is renewed year after year in the Bassa bolognese.
The Molinella Carnival 2026 celebrated its 70th edition with four events spread between late January and February in the various locations of the Municipality. The parades of allegorical floats, created by local associations, were accompanied by music, masks, food stalls, and entertainment for children, starting in the early afternoon.
Possible recovery dates in case of bad weather: February 15 and March 1.
