A day of brass bands, workshops, and ancient charm in the 'Music Village' of the Sannio region
In the heart of the Sannio region, nestled in the hills separating the province of Benevento from the Molise border, Molinara has been known for generations as the "village of music." This is no mere tourist slogan: the local brass band tradition dates back to the late 19th century and has spanned the entire 20th century, with a succession of masters and ensembles teaching music theory to generations of local youth. The Music Festival is the event that today brings that heritage back to the public square, in a June celebration that involves the entire village.
The event is not confined to a single stage; it unfolds from morning to evening, changing locations and engaging different audiences. It opens with a music workshop for children and teenagers, dedicated to discovering sounds and instruments: a direct way for those who have never held an instrument to touch brass, woodwinds, and percussion. In the afternoon, the music takes to the streets with a brass band parade through the town, while the evening centers around the municipal theater.
Alongside the local band, invited ensembles from neighboring areas perform, fostering the exchange between brass bands that forms the true cultural network of the central-southern Apennines. Recent editions have featured:
The most intimate moment of the day is the evening concert hosted in the Teatro Comunale "Santoro", featuring young talent: the orchestra of the Liceo Musicale "G. Guacci" of Benevento, joined by students from the "O. Fragnito" Comprehensive Institute of San Giorgio La Molara, conducted by Professor Debora Capitanio. This part of the program best explains the essence of the festival: music as an educational path that moves from the band to the school and back to the village.
Visitors to Molinara for the festival can also enjoy a guided tour of the old town, exploring the alleys and views of the historic center, and visit the food stalls prepared by local volunteers. It is authentic Sannio village cuisine—no gourmet pretenses, just local products: olive oil, wine, and the local potato, to which the Municipality dedicates a popular festival in the summer. It is the natural completion of a day that, more than a festival, feels like a community celebration open to visitors.
The initiative is part of the broader Festa della Musica, the annual event celebrated across Italy to welcome summer with widespread, free musical performances around June 21st. In Molinara, the date is moved forward by a few days to fit the local brass band calendar. The event is entirely managed locally: the Nuova Banda Città di Molinara as promoter, the Pro Loco in collaboration, and the patronage of the Municipality of Molinara, in Campania.
For those visiting the Sannio region, the Music Festival is an opportunity to see a living brass band tradition in a small, accessible setting where everything is within walking distance and the entry is an invitation rather than a ticket. We recommend arriving in the afternoon, following the parade through the village, stopping for the theater concert, and ending the day at the food stalls. Those looking to extend their stay can combine the visit with the nearby Roman Theater of Benevento, where the Molinara band has previously performed in a day dedicated to the village and its traditions.
The June 12, 2026 edition brought together all the ingredients that make the Molinara Music Festival recognizable: education, street performance, and theater. The day began with a music workshop where children and teenagers explored sounds and instruments, guided by the musicians of the local band.
In the afternoon, the music moved outdoors with a parade through the town streets, animated by three ensembles: the Nuova Banda Città di Molinara, the Nuova Arte 2 APS from Airola, and the Storico Concerto Bandistico di Gambatesa "Donato Di Maria". A meeting between the Sannio and Molise brass band traditions that traversed the historic center.
In the evening, the Teatro Comunale "Santoro" hosted a concert by the orchestra of the Liceo Musicale "G. Guacci" of Benevento, joined by students from the "O. Fragnito" Comprehensive Institute of San Giorgio La Molara, conducted by Professor Debora Capitanio. To complete the day, a guided tour of the old town and food stalls with dishes prepared by volunteers were available.
The event was held under the patronage of the Municipality of Molinara and in collaboration with the Pro Loco, in a free-admission format that involved the entire village in the province of Benevento.

By car: Molinara is located just over thirty kilometers northeast of Benevento, in the Val Fortore area, along the road connecting San Giorgio La Molara and San Marco dei Cavoti. The village is small, and on the day of the festival, the historic center is affected by the parade: it is best to leave your car in the parking spaces at the entrance to the town and continue on foot.
By train: The reference station is Benevento, connected to Naples, Caserta, and Foggia. From there, you can continue by car or local bus services, which may be very limited on holidays.
By plane: The most convenient airport is Naples Capodichino, about an hour and a half away by car.
The music workshop, the brass band parade, the concert at the Teatro Comunale Santoro, and the guided tour of the old town are free to attend. You only pay for what you consume at the food stalls run by the volunteers.
Accommodation in Molinara is limited to a few farmhouses (agriturismi) and guest houses in the area. Those looking for more options can stay in Benevento or nearby villages in the Fortore valley. For dining, it is worth relying on local cuisine: handmade pasta, olive oil, and Sannio wines.
