Handcrafted nativity scenes blending faith and imagination in the cloister of the Ecce Homo Sanctuary
The Mini-Nativity Scene Exhibition is one of the most cherished and well-attended Christmas events in the Messina region. It takes place annually in the cloister of the Gesù Ecce Homo Jubilee Sanctuary in Calvaruso, a district of the municipality of Villafranca Tirrena, in the Metropolitan City of Messina, Sicily. The exhibition is organized by the Franciscan Friars of the Third Order Regular, the custodians of the sanctuary, who have invited the community to contribute their own creations for over forty years.
The heart of the exhibition is an exhibition route showcasing more than 150 mini-nativity scenes. In the most recent edition, over 150 works were displayed, crafted by school groups, organized associations, families, and individuals. Each nativity scene is a product of its creator's imagination, utilizing a wide variety of materials: simple and recycled items, pasta, bottle caps, cork, wood, paper, and everyday objects reinterpreted with ingenuity. There are also themed nativity scenes, such as one depicting a football pitch to highlight the values of sport.
Set up along the walls and the cloister of the sanctuary, the exhibition offers a suggestive path for contemplating the joyful announcement of the Nativity. The small scenes illuminate the spaces of the jubilee complex, creating an intimate and familiar atmosphere that weaves together the spiritual dimension with popular and artisanal traditions. Every year, the event attracts numerous visitors, worshippers, and curious onlookers from across the province of Messina.
One of the most anticipated moments is the awarding of the most beautiful mini-nativity scenes, decided by a popular jury. Visitors can cast their votes in person or online via the Sanctuary of Calvaruso's Facebook page. This direct public involvement makes the exhibition a truly communal event, capable of uniting different generations around the tradition of the nativity scene.
The backdrop for the exhibition is the Gesù Ecce Homo Jubilee Sanctuary, one of the most revered places of worship in the Villafranca Tirrena area and a destination for pilgrims. The complex, managed by the Franciscan Friars, houses the venerated image of the Ecce Homo and hosts numerous devotional events throughout the year. During the Christmas holidays, it becomes the focal point of this nativity tradition, which, edition after edition, helps to enhance the religious and cultural heritage of the municipality and the entire Sicilian region.
