A day in the Middle Ages in Mineo

The Mineo Medieval Festival is one of the most evocative historical re-enactments in the Calatino, the inland plateau of the province of Catania. For one day, Contrada Fondacaccio, at the Mineo crossroads, transforms into a medieval camp animated by knights, flag-wavers, amazons, falconers, fire-eaters, and dancers, who bring the atmosphere of past centuries to life for visitors. The event celebrates the ancient medieval origins of the village of Mineo, a town rich in history and traditions in the Sicily Region.

Shows and horse tournaments

The most anticipated moment is the grand equestrian show, a sort of Round Table with a medieval horse tournament curated by the Equites Menarum association, the knights of Mineo. Alongside the equestrian skill tests, the program includes:

• Duels and weapons trials between costumed knights
• The characteristic girls' palio
• Falconry exhibitions with trained birds of prey
• Flag-waver shows and flag games
• Fire-eater acts and medieval-themed dances
• Horse rides and games for the little ones

An event for the whole family

The festival dedicates ample space to children's entertainment, with games, animation, and activities designed for families. The open-air setting, the camps, and the period costumes make the experience engaging for both adults and children, offering the chance to discover an authentic corner of inland Sicily.

Mineo and the Calatino

Located at an altitude of about 500 meters, the Municipality of Mineo is a village of ancient origins overlooking the Plain of Catania, home to a medieval castle and a historic center rich in churches and palaces. The Medieval Festival is part of this heritage, enhancing the historical identity of the Calatino territory and the legacy of Sicilian popular traditions.
