The historical re-enactment of the 1571 landing and the nautical Palio of the districts

Messina Sea Festival is one of the most cherished summer events in the capital of the Strait, located in the Municipality of Messina, Sicily. The event unites two deep souls of the city in a single day: the maritime tradition of its districts, celebrated with the August Palio, and the historical memory linked to the 1571 Battle of Lepanto, re-enacted with the Spectacular Landing of Don John of Austria. The initiative, curated by the Aurora Association together with the Municipality of Messina and numerous local entities, has been held since 2009 and has become a staple of the Messina Ferragosto, alongside the Vara and the Giants.
The sporting and popular heart of the festival is the August Palio – Don John of Austria Trophy, a regatta with roots in the 17th century, when it was held during the Assumption festivities preceding the Vara procession. Four seaside districts of the city — Pace, Case Basse, Grotte, and Paradiso — compete on the water along a five-kilometer course in the Strait, in front of the northern coast. The competition, organized in collaboration with the Naval League and local rowing clubs, is the moment when the coastal villages renew an ancient and festive rivalry.
In the late afternoon, the scene shifts to the Marina del Nettuno, where the grand historical re-enactment takes place. A naval procession, accompanied by period vessels and a training ship, reconstructs the arrival in Messina of Don John of Austria, the natural son of Emperor Charles V, who was appointed supreme commander of the Holy League fleet that gathered in the port of Messina in 1571 before sailing toward Lepanto. From the landing, a costumed procession winds along the waterfront and Largo Minutoli, reaching the steps of Palazzo Zanca and Piazza Unione Europea, featuring performers, nobles, commoners, soldiers, flag-wavers, and the Knights of the Star.
The Spectacular Landing of Don John of Austria is considered by the Ministry of Culture to be one of the most important historical re-enactments in Southern Italy, capable of attracting thousands of spectators to Messina. The event tells residents and visitors a decisive chapter in Mediterranean history, recalling the strategic role the city played on the eve of one of the most famous naval battles in history, and confirms itself as an identity-defining event for the entire Strait area.
A new edition of the Messina Sea Festival is expected for 2026, featuring the August Palio regatta between the seaside districts and the grand re-enactment of the Landing of Don John of Austria on the Messina waterfront. At the moment, the dates and detailed program have not yet been made public: the event usually takes place in August, in the days preceding the Messina Ferragosto festivities. Information will be updated as soon as the organizers announce the official calendar.
The event is traditionally held in August, in the days leading up to the Messina Ferragosto festivities (Vara and Giants). The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced.
The events take place on the Messina waterfront: the August Palio regatta in the waters of the Strait in front of the northern coast, the landing at the Marina del Nettuno, and the historical procession to Piazza Unione Europea, in front of Palazzo Zanca.
Messina is accessible by train (Messina Centrale station), by car via the A20 and A18 motorways, and by sea via the Strait ferries from Villa San Giovanni and Reggio Calabria. The waterfront is easily reachable on foot from the city center.
Access to the events on the waterfront is free.
