Folk groups from around the globe take to the streets of Messina in a celebration of peace and brotherhood

The International Festival of Solidarity Among the Peoples of the World – Music, Dance and Folk Traditions transforms Messina, in the Metropolitan City of Messina, Sicily, into a vibrant crossroads of cultures. Over two days, the city welcomes folk ensembles from various countries, who bring the rhythms, costumes, and traditions of their homelands to the streets. The event is organized by the Arca senza confini Association, which has long been dedicated to social solidarity initiatives, and is part of the city's E-state Messina summer calendar.
The heart of the festival is the grand folk parade, which winds through the streets of the southern villages of Messina – Ponte Schiavo, Briga San Paolo, and Giampilieri Marina. Dozens of artists in traditional attire bring the squares and streets to life with dances, songs, and traditional instruments, inviting residents and visitors to join in a free, widespread celebration. By choosing the seaside and hillside villages on the outskirts of Messina, the event maintains a grassroots, community-focused character, far from large stages and close to the people.
The festival reaches its climax with a gala evening at the Giardino Corallo in the center of Messina, where the various groups perform one after another. The stage hosts ensembles from Bulgaria, Chile, and Colombia, alongside Sicilian groups representing local traditions with regional instruments and songs. It is a moment where diverse cultures truly meet, sharing the same stage in the name of solidarity.
More than just a show, the festival is a genuine opportunity for people to connect. Folk dance becomes a common language that transcends linguistic and geographical barriers, conveying a clear message of peace, brotherhood, and solidarity. The initiative by the Arca senza confini Association bridges the cultural and social spheres, confirming Messina as an open and welcoming city that embraces the world's diverse identities.
At the moment, the Arca senza confini Association has not yet announced the dates and program for the 2026 edition of the festival. Historically, the event takes place in August, as part of the E-state Messina calendar, featuring folk group parades in the villages of Ponte Schiavo, Briga San Paolo, and Giampilieri Marina, followed by a closing gala at the Giardino Corallo. This page will be updated as soon as official information is released.
Messina is easily accessible by train (the central station is well-connected to Catania and Palermo) and by car via the A20 Messina-Palermo and A18 Messina-Catania motorways. The southern villages (Ponte Schiavo, Briga San Paolo, Giampilieri Marina) can be reached via the coastal state road or local public transport. The Giardino Corallo is located in the city center.
The parades and the closing gala are free of charge.
The event typically takes place in August as part of the E-state Messina program. We recommend checking for updated dates on the official channels of the Municipality of Messina and the Arca senza confini Association.
