The IGP green asparagus festival in the shadow of the Este Castle, in the heart of the Po Delta
In the heart of the Po Delta, where sandy soils have made a delicate yet prized cultivation famous, the Municipality of Mesola annually celebrates its flagship product with the Asparagus Fair. Now in its 34th edition in 2026, the event is one of the most anticipated food and wine gatherings in the province of Ferrara and all of eastern Emilia-Romagna, attracting thousands of visitors between late April and the first days of May.
The absolute star is the IGP green asparagus of the Po Delta, which has found its ideal environment in the sandy soils and mild climate of the area, becoming one of the most widespread and profitable crops in the region. During the fair, the vegetable is served in all its variations: from appetizers to first courses, from omelets to more creative preparations, always respecting local cuisine. There are also free tastings and direct sales of freshly picked produce.
The food stands, managed by volunteers from the Pro Loco of Mesola, are the heart of the event and offer a wide selection of asparagus-based dishes along with other Delta specialties. Alongside the dining options, an exhibition market hosts producers and artisans showcasing typical products, flowers, gardening items, agricultural equipment, and various crafts.
The setting is the evocative Este Castle of Mesola, one of the Este Delights built between 1578 and 1583 at the behest of Duke Alfonso II d'Este. Markets, play areas for children, and a funfair are set up around the manor, while squares and streets in the town center host shows and entertainment for all ages.
The evening program is full of events: evenings with live music, tribute bands, fire and magic shows, dance performances, and the traditional 'tombole' (bingo) that recall village traditions. Each day offers a different event, in a rhythm of conviviality that accompanies the festival until late at night.
The Asparagus Fair is also an opportunity to discover the surrounding natural heritage. Guided tours of the Este Delight, walks, and excursions on foot, by bicycle, and by boat are planned in the Gran Bosco della Mesola Nature Reserve, one of the last and best-preserved stretches of floodplain forest of the ancient Adriatic coast, spanning over a thousand hectares. A blend of gastronomy, culture, and environment that tells the most authentic identity of the Po Delta.
The 34th edition of the Mesola Asparagus Fair was spread over two weekends, from April 24 to 26 and from April 30 to May 3, 2026, with food stands dedicated to the IGP green asparagus of the Po Delta.
The entertainment program offered a different event each evening: fire and magic shows and the "Danza Asparago" event, bingo games, musical performances, and the rock and roll party on May 1st, culminating in the closing "Apery Fiera" on May 3rd. Alongside the food, there were markets, a funfair for all ages, and guided tours of the Gran Bosco della Mesola.
For all days: food stands with IGP green asparagus, markets, funfair, and excursions in the area.
Mesola is located in the northeastern part of the province of Ferrara, along the SS 309 Romea state road connecting Ravenna and Venice. By car, it is easily reachable from the Ferrara (A13) highway exit, continuing towards the Delta. The nearest train station is Codigoro, connected by local buses.
Admission to the fair is free. Food stands are typically open for lunch (from 11:30 AM) and dinner (from 7:00 PM), with hours that may vary daily: it is advisable to consult the official program of the Pro Loco of Mesola.
We recommend combining a visit to the fair with an excursion to the Gran Bosco della Mesola and exploring the Este Castle. On central and festive days, attendance is high: it's best to arrive early for parking.
