The cross-country skiing race on the trails of Val Varaita, in memory of the founder of Nordic skiing in Casteldelfino
The Memorial Orazio Bruna is the winter highlight for cross-country skiing enthusiasts in Casteldelfino, a small village in the upper Val Varaita, in the Province of Cuneo (Piedmont). The race is dedicated to the memory of Orazio Bruna, the historic president of the Sci Club Busca who passed away in 2015. He was the visionary behind Casteldelfino's cross-country trails and the founder of popular local events such as the Caminada Bianca of Val Varaita and the 6 and 4-hour races of Casteldelfino.
The event is organized by the Sci Club Busca in collaboration with the Casteldelfino Viva tourist-sports association and with the patronage of the Municipality of Casteldelfino. It is a day designed primarily for young cross-country skiers from the Western Alps committee, but it is also open to more experienced athletes: the tracks host categories ranging from Super Baby to Senior, often featuring prominent athletes from the national circuit.
The Memorial takes place on the Casteldelfino cross-country trails, known as La Trasà or the Escartoun tracks—the very same routes designed by Orazio Bruna. The cross-country center offers loops of varying lengths (2, 3, 5, and 12 km) that wind through the town's scenic pine forest up to the Torrette area. One of the tracks is officially homologated by the Italian Winter Sports Federation (FISI) for competitions. Race distances vary by category, ranging from short loops for the youngest skiers to longer, more challenging courses for the Youth and Senior categories.
Beyond the competitive aspect, the Memorial Orazio Bruna is a festive occasion for the entire upper Val Varaita: families, Piedmontese ski clubs, and fans gather trackside to cheer on the young athletes. Over the years, the race has seen various ski clubs from the Cuneo area triumph in the team rankings, a testament to a vibrant sports network deeply rooted in the mountains. The Casteldelfino cross-country track, which recently benefited from significant regional investment, confirms the Nordic skiing vocation of this corner of Piedmont.
