International trail running at the foot of the Monte Rosa East Face, in Macugnaga
The MEHT – Monterosa Est Himalayan Trail is one of the most evocative trail running races in the Alps. It takes place in Macugnaga, in the Province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola, in the heart of the Ossola Valleys in Piedmont, beneath what mountaineers call "the Himalayan face of the Alps": the East Face of Monte Rosa, the highest rock and ice wall in the entire Alpine range. This is where the event takes its evocative name.
Macugnaga is a Walser village of rare beauty, nicknamed the "Pearl of the Rosa" for its location at the foot of the massif. Its wooden mountain huts, traditions, and ancient Titsch dialect provide the setting for a race that is not just a competition, but an immersion into an authentic mountain territory. The event's headquarters is the MEHT Village, set up in the town center, where athletes pick up their race bibs and where the festive atmosphere of the event is concentrated.
The MEHT offers courses for every level, from expert trail runners to children:
Organized by the Sport PRO-MOTION A.S.D. association, the MEHT attracts hundreds of athletes every year from all Italian regions and about fifteen foreign nations. More than just a race, it is an event that combines sport, landscape, and Alpine culture, capable of introducing Macugnaga and the Ossola region to mountain enthusiasts from all over Europe.
The 2026 edition of the MEHT – Monterosa Est Himalayan Trail takes place in Macugnaga (VB) on the weekend of Saturday, August 1st, and Sunday, August 2nd, 2026, at the foot of the Monte Rosa East Face. The MEHT Village, in the town center, is the logistical hub of the event, opening early on Friday, July 31st, for bib collection and technical briefings. The four competitive distances—EPIC, SKY, SCENIC, and ZMAKANA'—are confirmed, alongside the Mini Trail for the little ones scheduled for Sunday morning.
The EPIC race exceeds 4,000 meters of elevation gain and tackles high-altitude passes such as the Monte Moro Pass (2,985 m).
The heart of the event is the MEHT Village, set up in the center of Macugnaga (VB), where all races start and finish.
Macugnaga can be reached by car by driving up the Anzasca Valley from the Piedimulera motorway exit (A26). Bus connections to the valley are available from the Domodossola train station. On race days, it is recommended to check the parking instructions provided by the organization.
Registrations can be made online on the official website meht.it; in-person registration is also available at the MEHT Village during the event days. For information: [email protected].
