About MEHT

The MEHT – Monterosa Est Himalayan Trail is an international trail running event that transforms Macugnaga, the "Pearl of the Rosa," into Italy's mountain running capital every summer. Beneath the East Face of Monte Rosa—the highest in the Alps—athletes from across Italy and around fifteen nations compete across four distances, plus a Mini Trail for children, all set against the spectacular backdrop of the Ossola Valleys.

A trail run at the foot of the Alpine giant

The MEHT – Monterosa Est Himalayan Trail is one of the most evocative trail running races in the Alps. It takes place in Macugnaga, in the Province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola, in the heart of the Ossola Valleys in Piedmont, beneath what mountaineers call "the Himalayan face of the Alps": the East Face of Monte Rosa, the highest rock and ice wall in the entire Alpine range. This is where the event takes its evocative name.

Macugnaga, the Pearl of the Rosa

Macugnaga is a Walser village of rare beauty, nicknamed the "Pearl of the Rosa" for its location at the foot of the massif. Its wooden mountain huts, traditions, and ancient Titsch dialect provide the setting for a race that is not just a competition, but an immersion into an authentic mountain territory. The event's headquarters is the MEHT Village, set up in the town center, where athletes pick up their race bibs and where the festive atmosphere of the event is concentrated.

Four distances plus the Mini Trail

The MEHT offers courses for every level, from expert trail runners to children:

  • EPIC — the flagship race, approximately 61 km with over 4,000 meters of elevation gain, crossing high-altitude passes like the Monte Moro Pass (2,985 m).
  • SKY — approximately 38 km, a technical and fast race with significant elevation gain.
  • SCENIC — approximately 21 km, the scenic route for those who want to experience the mountains without the extreme commitment of the longer distances.
  • ZMAKANA' — approximately 13 km, the most accessible distance to get started with trail running.
  • MEHT Mini Trail — 2 km dedicated to the little ones, scheduled for Sunday morning.

An international race

Organized by the Sport PRO-MOTION A.S.D. association, the MEHT attracts hundreds of athletes every year from all Italian regions and about fifteen foreign nations. More than just a race, it is an event that combines sport, landscape, and Alpine culture, capable of introducing Macugnaga and the Ossola region to mountain enthusiasts from all over Europe.
