About Ovindoli Medieval Historical Pageant

In Ovindoli, in the province of L'Aquila, the Medieval Historical Pageant brings to life a pivotal episode in the history of the Marsica region: the passage of Charles I of Anjou in 1268, shortly before the Battle of the Piani Palentini. Promoted by the Marsica Medioevale project, the event brings the streets and squares of this Abruzzo village to life with costumed performers, flag-wavers, musicians, and jesters, set against the backdrop of the Altopiano delle Rocche mountains.

A re-enactment in the heart of the Marsica mountains

The Medieval Historical Pageant in Ovindoli, nestled in the heart of the Altopiano delle Rocche in the province of L'Aquila, revives one of the most significant moments in the history of the Marsica region: the passage of Charles I of Anjou across the plains of Ovindoli in 1268, just before the famous Battle of the Piani Palentini (also known as the Battle of Tagliacozzo). Subtitled "The Passing of a King," the event transforms the Abruzzo village into an open-air stage where time seems to turn back over seven centuries.

The Marsica Medioevale project

The event stems from the Marsica Medioevale project, led by architect Lorenzo Fallocco, which aims to rediscover and promote the medieval heritage of the Marsica territory. The re-enactment chronologically reconstructs the events leading up to, accompanying, and following the 1268 battle, helping residents and visitors understand the role this land played in a conflict that shaped the history of Southern Italy. The project is supported by the Municipality of Ovindoli and the Carispaq Foundation, which is committed to recovering regional historical identity and awareness.

What to expect

A procession of costumed performers winds through the alleys, squares, and districts of Ovindoli's historic center, accompanied by flag-wavers, musicians, and jesters. The citizens of Ovindoli and its hamlets themselves take on the roles of ladies, knights, commoners, and dignitaries, creating a collective narrative that unites the community around its own heritage. The medieval atmosphere, filled with the sound of drums, trumpets, and flags, engages both adults and children in an emotionally stirring evening.

  • Historical costume procession through the village alleys and squares
  • Flag-wavers, musicians, and jesters
  • Re-enactment of the 1268 passage of Charles I of Anjou
  • Setting among the mountains of the Altopiano delle Rocche

Ovindoli and Abruzzo

Situated at an altitude of over 1,300 meters, Ovindoli is one of the most popular destinations in the Abruzzo mountains, appreciated in winter for snow sports and in summer for the cool climate and nature of the Sirente-Velino Regional Park. The Medieval Historical Pageant is one of the highlights of the Ovindoli summer, an opportunity to discover an authentic village and its deep roots through the fascinating lens of the medieval Marsica.
