About San Michele Medieval Festival

In the heart of the Garfagnana, the tiny village of San Michele in Piazza al Serchio (Province of Lucca) transforms into a medieval hamlet for two nights in August. The Medieval Festival – The Brigands of the Bridge welcomes you with a wandering dinner along the village streets, artisan markets, musicians, stilt walkers, and fire shows, culminating in the famous assault on the bridge that gives the event its name. A free, family-friendly evening event that takes you back in time amidst traditional Garfagnana flavors and old-world atmospheres.

A village returning to the Middle Ages

Every summer, in early August, the hamlet of San Michele in Piazza al Serchio, in the heart of the Garfagnana in the Province of Lucca, dons ancient attire and becomes the stage for one of the most heartfelt historical re-enactments in the Serchio Valley. The Medieval Festival – The Brigands of the Bridge transforms the narrow streets of the village into a medieval hamlet, complete with torches, artisan stalls, and costumed performers.

The wandering dinner and the flavors of the Garfagnana

The gastronomic heart of the festival is the wandering food and wine tour, which kicks off around 7:30 PM: walking along the village streets, you can taste traditional local dishes served at various stations set up by volunteers. It is the most authentic way to discover Garfagnana cuisine, made of local products and mountain recipes, in a period setting.

Shows, musicians, and the assault on the bridge

Between courses, the village comes alive with street performances and entertainment: artisan markets, wandering musicians, stilt walkers from the Compagnia del Circotà, and evocative fire shows. The most anticipated moment is the re-enactment of the assault on the bridge – the "Battle of the Bridge" – which gives the organizing group its name and recounts, with actors and scenery, an episode of revolt set in the medieval village.

A community event

The event is organized by the Associazione Briganti di San Michele, a group of volunteers who have been curating the re-enactment with great passion for several years. It is an appointment that unites the entire community and attracts visitors from all over the Garfagnana and neighboring provinces. Admission is free, and the evening schedule, from sunset until late at night, makes the atmosphere even more magical amidst the glow of the torches.

Why it's worth the trip

The San Michele Medieval Festival is perfect for those seeking an authentic experience away from large tourist events: a tiny village, a valley rich in history and traditions, and genuine hospitality. An evening in the Garfagnana that combines good food, entertainment, and historical memory, ideal for families and curious visitors of all ages.
