Easter Monday featuring combat, falconry, and performances in the village at the foot of the castle
On Easter Monday, the village of Roccascalegna — a small municipality of just over a thousand inhabitants in the province of Chieti, in the heart of Abruzzo — transforms into an open-air medieval village. The event, organized by the Pro Loco Association of Roccascalegna, takes place at the foot of the famous Medieval Castle and transports visitors back in time with historical re-enactments, roving performances, and ancient crafts.
For an entire day, the streets of the historic center and Piazza Umberto I are filled with costumed combat, demonstrations by armed soldiers and crossbowmen, the art of flag-wavers, period music, jesters, fortune tellers, and acrobats. One of the most anticipated moments is the falconry exhibition, featuring medieval hunting displays and the flight of hawks and birds of prey. There are also roving theatrical performances, juggling, and puppet shows for the little ones.
The event is framed by one of Italy's most spectacular castles: the Castle of Roccascalegna, perched on a rocky spur overlooking the valley between the Sangro and Aventino rivers, on the edge of the Maiella mountains. Of Lombard origin and expanded between the 15th and 16th centuries, the manor has been chosen as a set for major film productions, including The Name of the Rose and Tale of Tales by Matteo Garrone. Restored and reopened to the public in 1996, it is now maintained by Pro Loco volunteers.
Medieval Easter Monday is a well-established tradition that attracts numerous visitors from all over Abruzzo and neighboring regions every year. The event runs continuously from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM, with performances repeated throughout the day. Entrance to the Castle requires a symbolic fee, while entertainment in the village is free to access. The Pro Loco also offers a catering service with dedicated menus, allowing you to spend the entire day immersed in the medieval atmosphere of this Abruzzese village.
