About Peasant Life of Yesteryear — Pontey in the Nativity Scene

In the multi-purpose hall of the Microcomunità of Pontey, in Valle d'Aosta, carpenter Serafino Servodidio has brought to life an extraordinary mechanized exhibition: peasant life of the past reproduced in miniature, with hundreds of characters, dozens of motors, and over two hundred animated movements. Realistic production chains — the baking of 'pan ner', the production of 'fontina', haymaking — and a reconstruction of the village of Pontey, including the nativity scene and a section dedicated to Bethlehem. A small moving world, perfect to discover in summer and during the Christmas period.

A Peasant World in Miniature

In Pontey, a small municipality in the middle Valle d'Aosta in the Province of Aosta, the Sala polivalente della Microcomunità (ground floor, west side, in Lassolaz) hosts an unusual exhibition. It is the work of carpenter Serafino Servodidio, who has recreated in miniature the peasant life of yesteryear: historical and cultural buildings, entire production chains reproduced in minute detail, where wheat becomes flour and the wood-fired oven's chimney actually smokes.

252 Characters, 110 Motors, 210 Movements

The exhibition is mechanized: 252 characters, 110 motors, and 210 movements bring the scenes to life. Recognizable are the black bread (pan ner) production chain, the fontina cheese production chain, haymaking, and a miniature reconstruction of the village of Pontey. Alongside the rural life scenes, there is the nativity scene and, from 2025, a new section dedicated to Bethlehem, with 250 figures and 110 motors.

When to Visit

The exhibition, set up for several years, is freely open to the public during the months of August and the Christmas period, with fixed hours; the rest of the year it can be visited by appointment. An ideal destination for families and the curious, it concretely and poetically tells the peasant tradition and material culture of Valle d'Aosta.
