Art, music, and local identity in the shadow of Mount Etna, in Belpasso
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Mechané Festival is one of the most cherished summer cultural events in Belpasso, a town in the province of Catania nestled on the southwestern slopes of Mount Etna. Born to showcase the artistic and devotional heritage linked to the famous Carri di Santa Lucia, the festival has grown edition after edition into a multidisciplinary event. Over nearly two weeks, it features theater, folk music, visual arts, and moments of shared reflection.
The term mechané refers to the ancient Greek theatrical device used to make gods appear on stage: a perfect metaphor for a festival that aims to reveal the hidden beauty of the Etna region. Artistically directed by Gianni De Luca and promoted by the Fondazione Carri di Santa Lucia in collaboration with the Belpasso Pro Loco, the festival is held under the patronage of the Municipality of Belpasso, the Sicilian Regional Assembly, and the Regional Department of Tourism, Sport, and Entertainment.
The festival unfolds across the Arena Caudullo, the main stage for the evening events, as well as the Cortile Russo Giusti, Giardino Martoglio, the Villa Comunale, the evocative Ruderi di Malpasso, and Piazza Sant'Antonio, where the festival traditionally concludes with the performance of the Carro di Santa Lucia. It is a journey through art and devotion that allows visitors to discover Belpasso and the entire Etna region of eastern Sicily.
At the moment, the organizers — the Fondazione Carri di Santa Lucia and the Belpasso Pro Loco — have not yet released the official dates or the program for the 2026 edition of the Mechané Festival. Based on previous years, the festival is usually held between the second half of July and the first days of August, featuring theater, folk music, exhibitions, and the performance of the Carri di Santa Lucia in the center of Belpasso, in the province of Catania. This page will be updated as soon as official information is published.
Belpasso is located about 20 km from Catania and is well-connected via the SS121 and the Catania ring road. By train or plane, reach Catania (Fontanarossa Airport) and continue by car or public transport toward the Etna area.
The festival evenings, organized by the Fondazione Carri di Santa Lucia and the Pro Loco with the patronage of the Municipality of Belpasso, are traditionally free to attend.
Events take place outdoors during the summer evenings: bring light clothing for the night and arrive a little early for the most popular shows, such as the Gran Galà delle Cantate and the final performance of the Carri.
