Vintage vehicles, accordions, and local products in the heart of the Canavese region
Every spring, the village of Albiano d'Ivrea, in the heart of the Canavese region near Turin, comes alive with the May Festival, an event that blends Piedmontese folk traditions with a passion for vintage engines and local music. Promoted by the Percorso delle Meraviglie association alongside local groups, the event transforms the historic center into a meeting place for enthusiasts, families, and curious visitors.
The heart of the festival is the rally of vintage 2 and 4-wheeled vehicles: a static exhibition gathering bicycles, motorcycles, cars, trucks, and tractors from days gone by. Polished and lined up along the village streets, these vehicles tell the story of mechanics and rural life in the Canavese, offering visitors an authentic journey into the past.
The soundtrack of the day is provided by the accordion gathering: musicians are free to perform, including in duos with saxophones or clarinets, during two collective sessions that punctuate the festival around noon and in the afternoon. The atmosphere is completed by the Albiano Musical Band, a living expression of the local brass band tradition.
A market of local products winds through the village streets, with stalls offering gastronomic specialties, handicrafts, and local curiosities. It is the perfect opportunity to taste and take home the genuine flavors of the Canavese in the convivial atmosphere typical of Piedmontese village festivals.
The festival is closely linked to the Percorso delle Meraviglie, an 8 km hiking loop that winds through the hills of Albiano d'Ivrea among vineyards, woods, stone fortifications, and the Bishop's Castle. Along the route, which can be explored on foot or by mountain bike, one encounters large-scale art installations like the famous 'Bishop's Armchair', a tribute to the prelates who resided in the castle. The festival day is often accompanied by a spring walk along this itinerary, which combines nature, art, and local identity.
With its mix of vintage engines, folk music, local flavors, and nature walks, the May Festival of Albiano d'Ivrea is an event designed for all ages. It is a genuine opportunity to experience the authenticity of a small Piedmontese town and discover the discreet charm of the Canavese.
