The historic market fair that heralds the summer in the heart of the Erei Mountains
The May Fair is a traditional market fair held in the historic center of Piazza Armerina, an art city nestled in the Erei Mountains in the province of Enna, in the heart of Sicily. For three consecutive days, the streets and squares of the city center turn into an extensive open-air market, enlivened by hundreds of stalls and street vendors from across the island and the mainland.
The fair has deep historical roots. As early as 1654, local historian Giovanni Chiarandà described Piazza Armerina as a "mercantile city with three fairs or free markets," a testament to a commercial vocation that has spanned centuries. Today's event is the direct heir to the SS. Sacramento Fair, which was linked to the Corpus Domini feast: originally, it lasted sixteen days and, until the 1930s, extended until June 8th. Held under the patronage of the Cathedral by ancient royal privilege, the fair once dictated the economic and social life of the community.
The May Fair is not merely a commercial event; for generations, it has served as a vital meeting point for the community of Piazza Armerina. Popular tradition recalls how, during these large gatherings, families would dress their daughters of marriageable age in their finest clothes, hoping they would be noticed by potential suitors. Even today, the fair retains this value as a collective gathering, a moment when the entire city spills out into the streets of the center.
During the fair, the pedestrian area covers numerous streets in the center, including via G. Lo Giudice, via Intorcetta, via R. Roccella, Piazza Boris Giuliano, via Chiarandà , via Filippo Guccio, via G. Roccella, via Caltanissetta, and Piazza Senatore Marescalchi. The stalls offer everything: clothing, footwear, household goods, local products, sweets and gastronomic specialties, home decor, and handicrafts. The atmosphere is that of the great Sicilian village fairs, filled with the chatter of vendors and the strolling of families.
Visiting the May Fair means catching an authentic glimpse of the popular culture of the Enna area, in one of the most fascinating cities in inland Sicily, famous for the nearby Villa Romana del Casale and its extraordinary mosaics. The event, organized by the Municipality of Piazza Armerina, is a perfect opportunity to discover the historic center in a festive and vibrant atmosphere.
The 2026 May Fair was held from May 30 to June 1 in the historic center of Piazza Armerina. The fair area covered numerous streets in the center, including via G. Lo Giudice, via Intorcetta, via R. Roccella, Piazza Boris Giuliano, via Chiarandà , via Filippo Guccio, via G. Roccella, via Caltanissetta, and Piazza Senatore Marescalchi.
Traffic modifications were in effect from 8:00 AM on May 30 to 8:00 PM on June 1, with the center largely pedestrianized. Participation was reserved for holders of public trade authorizations, with priority given to operators with higher attendance in previous editions. Numerous stalls selling clothing, household goods, local products, and handicrafts enlivened the days.
Piazza Armerina can be reached by car via the SS117bis, which connects Enna to the A19 Palermo-Catania motorway. The most convenient train station is in Enna, with onward travel by bus.
On the days of the event, the historic center is largely pedestrianized and traffic is restricted: it is recommended to leave your car in the peripheral parking lots and reach the fair area on foot. Traffic is regulated by the Municipal Police Command.
Access to the fair is free and open to the public.
