The autumn festival of the Massa hamlet, in the Reggiano Apennines
The Massa Village Festival is the popular celebration that every autumn brings together residents and visitors in the hamlet of Massa, a small village in the municipality of Toano, in the province of Reggio Emilia. Situated at about 650 meters above sea level along the Dolo river valley, a few kilometers from the municipal capital, Massa is one of the many historic settlements dotting the Reggiano Apennines, where village festivals remain a cherished and deeply rooted event in community life.
The village preserves traces of an ancient past: the Church of San Michele Arcangelo, whose origins date back to remote times and which was rebuilt in the Matildic era, and the remains of the Castle of Massa with the Ferrarini Tower, a testament to the numerous fortifications that once controlled these valleys between the Secchia and Dolo rivers. It is in this stone and mountain setting that the festival takes place, a living expression of the folklore and popular traditions that the Pro Loco of Massa preserves and passes down.
As in many festivals in the Reggiano Apennines, the protagonist of the Village Festival is traditional peasant food. The food stalls offer typical mountain dishes—from polenta to local products—prepared and served by Pro Loco volunteers, in a festive atmosphere that unites different generations. The festival is also an opportunity to discover the hospitality of an authentic territory, far from mass tourist circuits.
More than just a gastronomic event, the Massa Village Festival represents a moment of gathering for the inhabitants of the hamlet and for those who choose to come to the mountains to rediscover the rhythms and flavors of the most genuine Emilia-Romagna. A day that tells the identity of a small Apennine village and the passion with which its people continue to celebrate their roots.
