The very name of Palmariggi, a small town in the Province of Lecce in the heart of Salento, Puglia, is rooted in a legend dear to the community. According to tradition, in 1480, during the fall of Otranto to the Saracens, the Virgin appeared "with a palm in her hand," leading an imposing host and forcing the Turkish invaders to flee. The village is said to have taken its name from that image, and the Madonna, venerated as Maria Vergine della Palma, has been the town's protector ever since.
The most anticipated moment of the year is the patronal feast, celebrated on the last Sunday of July. The historic center is adorned with luminarie (artistic light displays), and the statue of the patron saint is carried in a solemn procession through the streets, accompanied by faithful devotees and traditional chants. The event also features a brass band concert in the squareโa staple of Salento patronal feastsโand an evening fireworks display that lights up the sky over lower Salento.
The devotion in Palmariggi is deeply intertwined with the Sanctuary of the Madonna di Montevergine, built in 1707 over an ancient rock-hewn church that houses a Byzantine icon of the Madonna and Child. Tradition tells that in 1595, a young shepherd discovered the sacred image, giving rise to the cult. Even today, the statue of the Madonna di Montevergine is carried on the shoulders of the women of Palmariggi along the ancient path connecting the sanctuary to the town, amidst centuries-old olive trees and dry-stone walls illuminated by thousands of torches.
The heart of the festivities is the Mother Church of San Luca Evangelista, rebuilt between 1777 and 1783 in refined Lecce Baroque style, with its single nave and stucco-decorated vaults. The village, with ancient origins evidenced by menhirs and dolmens, retains the intimate atmosphere of the Otranto hinterland towns and is a precious stop for those wishing to discover the most authentic Salento, far from the beaten tourist paths.
The patronal feast is also an occasion for meeting and conviviality: during the festival days, the town comes alive with stalls and flavors, from the essential handmade orecchiette pasta to ciceri e tria, and typical sweets, all seasoned with generous local extra virgin olive oil. Palmariggi confirms its festive spirit at other times of the year as well, with the Bruschetta Festival in August at the Sanctuary of Montevergine and the "Lu Paniri te e site" festival dedicated to pomegranates in the autumn.
The 2026 edition of the Palmariggi patronal feast has not yet been officially scheduled. Tradition sets the festivities in honor of Maria Vergine della Palma for the last Sunday of July, featuring the solemn procession of the patron saint's statue, illuminations in the historic center, a brass band concert, and fireworks. Information will be updated as soon as the Parish of San Luca Evangelista and the Municipality of Palmariggi publish the detailed program.
Palmariggi is located in lower Salento, in the Province of Lecce, about 40 km from Lecce and a few kilometers from Maglie and Otranto. By car, it can be reached via the provincial roads of the Otranto hinterland. The most convenient train station is Maglie (Sud-Est line), while the reference airports are Brindisi and Bari.
The festivities take place in the historic center, around the Mother Church of San Luca Evangelista, and also involve the Sanctuary of the Madonna di Montevergine, just outside the town. The patronal feast is held on the last Sunday of July.
The festival is free to attend.
Wear comfortable shoes to follow the procession through the village streets and take advantage of the visit to discover the Sanctuary of Montevergine and the rock-hewn crypt. Salento summer evenings can be warm: bring water and a hat.
