Horses, butteri, and Maremma traditions on the Montalto Marina seafront
Maremma d'aMare - Maremma Traditions Fair is the May event that the Municipality of Montalto di Castro, in the province of Viterbo (Lazio), dedicates to the equestrian culture and rural heritage of the stretch of Maremma that descends from Upper Tuscia to the sea. The event takes place in Montalto Marina, between the seafront, the Municipal Pine Forest, and the Piazzale del Palombaro, where the Traditions Village is set upโthe beating heart of the fair with its free grandstand overlooking the arena.
The hallmark of Maremma d'aMare is its equestrian shows. Carousels, horse choreography, demonstrations of Maremma-style riding, and rural processions bring back the figure of the buttero, the mounted herdsman who for centuries managed Maremma cattle herds in the marshlands between Lazio and Tuscany. Alongside the riders, Maremma-breed cattle, farm wagons, and antique work tools parade: not just a simple exhibition, but the enactment of a living identity. The national Senofonte Award for the best Italian show in the tradition, folklore, and Italian horse category confirms the high level achieved by the event.
In the Municipal Pine Forest, the Path of Traditions takes shapeโan educational and recreational route designed especially for families and school groups. Along the trail, visitors encounter farm and Maremma animals, observe ancient crafts, and discover the customs, tools, and stories of the territory. It is the educational soul of the fair, allowing even the youngest to understand the origins of the surrounding landscape.
The seafront transforms into a long market exhibition featuring artisan exhibitors, local agricultural produce, the culinary excellence of Tuscia, and street food stands. Alongside the stands are a funfair, wooden games for children, and recreational activities that keep the public entertained from morning until night.
Located on the Tyrrhenian coast, the fair takes advantage of its position with initiatives on the beach: sports demonstrations, parades on the shoreline, and above all the Kite Festival "Colors and art in the sky," which fills the beach with shapes and colorsโa light and family-friendly counterpoint to the equestrian shows in the Village.
Organized by the Municipal Administration of Montalto di Castro together with the Tc&m association, Maremma d'aMare has become one of the most attractive spring events in the province of Viterbo, capable of drawing visitors from all over Lazio and nearby Tuscany, effectively kicking off the tourist season on the coast. Admission is free for the entire duration of the event.
A visit to the fair can easily be combined with the local heritage: the Vulci Archaeological Park, one of the most important Etruscan cities, is just a few kilometers away, while the coast offers sandy beaches, pine forests, and the Vulci Oasis along the Fiora River. A weekend that combines tradition, nature, and archaeology.
From May 8 to 10, 2026, Montalto Marina hosted the eleventh edition of the Maremma Traditions Fair, organized by the Municipality of Montalto di Castro with the Tc&m association. Three days of equestrian shows, crafts, local products, and beach activities, with free admission.
The highlight of the year was the equestrian show "The Centaur's Dream," performed by the Cavalieri di Maremma with the Ruben Ranch school, scheduled every evening at 6:00 PM and culminating in the grand finale on Sunday. In the morning, the "A Morning in Maremma" carousel brought butteri, horses, and Maremma-style riding back to the arena.
Alongside the shows, the Path of Traditions in the Municipal Pine Forest, wooden games, the "Colors and art in the sky" Kite Festival on the beach, the free animal microchipping day, and the parade of the Carabinieri mounted fanfare completed a program designed for audiences of all ages.
