Floats, costumes, and music through the streets of the village at the foot of Monte Gennaro
Marcellina is a town in the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, in the Lazio region, nestled at the foot of Monte Gennaro and the Lucretili Mountains, just over thirty kilometers from the capital. Every winter, the town pauses its quiet daily routine for the Marcellinese Carnival, a masquerade festival organized by the Municipality in collaboration with local associations. This is not a massive, spectacular carnival, but rather a community event: the residents themselves build the floats, sew the costumes, and take to the streets.
The heart of the festival is the parade of allegorical floats, which winds through the main streets of Marcellina before returning to the starting point. The floats are created in the months leading up to the event in local garages and warehouses, the result of volunteer work by groups of friends, parents, and associations. Alongside the floats, costumed groupsโoften themedโand the marching band with majorettes set the rhythm for the day.
The participation of schools is a distinctive feature: the Marcellina Comprehensive Institute, including the preschool and primary school, and the nursery school work together with the children to prepare masks and decorations. The result is a deeply intergenerational festival, where the youngest children parade alongside the elderly from the local community center.
The Marcellinese Carnival is made possible by a dense network of local entities: the Pro Loco, the Confraternity of Saint Anthony Abbot, the senior center, civic and veterans' associations, as well as dozens of families who renew their commitment every year. The municipal administration coordinates the event and ensures the safety of the route, which winds through the squares and streets of the town center.
In Lazio, Carnival has ancient roots and takes many different forms: from the 'loose horses' of Ronciglione to the grand parades of Poggio Mirteto and Velletri. Marcellina belongs to the family of village carnivals, where the festival is not a show for tourists but a collective ritual that strengthens the village's identity. Visitors are welcomed without pretense: everyone parades together, applauds the floats, and shares fried sweets like castagnole and frappe, which are staples on Lazio tables during this season.
A visit to the Carnival can be the perfect opportunity to discover an off-the-beaten-path corner of the Roman province. Marcellina is the gateway to the Lucretili Mountains Regional Natural Park, with trails leading up toward Monte Gennaro and views stretching across the Roman countryside. Just a few kilometers away are Tivoli, home to the UNESCO-listed Villa d'Este and Hadrian's Villa, and the villages of the Aniene Valley. A Carnival weekend in Marcellina can thus combine popular festivities, nature, and great archaeology.
The Marcellinese Carnival is the right choice for those who want to experience a free, family-friendly, and accessible festival. No tickets or reservations are needed: just arrive in town, perhaps in costume, and let yourself be swept up by the parade. It is the most direct way to understand how Carnival is lived in the towns of Lazio, where popular tradition persists and renews itself every year thanks to the volunteer work of an entire community.
The masquerade festival of Marcellina was spread over several days between February 12 and 15, 2026. The opening, on Thursday, February 12, saw the parade of allegorical floats depart from Piazza Cesare Battisti in the early afternoon to travel through the village streets. On Saturday, February 14, the calendar included a religious moment with Holy Mass, while Sunday, February 15, featured a new gathering of the floats and the final parade. Between one float and another, costumed groups, confetti, and music accompanied residents and visitors along the entire route.
The event, promoted by the Municipality of Marcellina with the support of local associations, took place entirely on the street and was free of charge.
Program announced by the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital; times and routes may be subject to change due to organizational or weather reasons.
By car from Rome: A24 Rome-L'Aquila, take the Tivoli exit, then the SS5 Tiburtina Valeria and the provincial road to Marcellina (approx. 35 km from the Grande Raccordo Anulare). By train: FL2 line Rome Tiburtina-Tivoli, stop at Tivoli or Bagni di Tivoli, then take a Cotral bus to Marcellina. Numerous Cotral buses connect Marcellina to Rome Ponte Mammolo (Metro Line B).
The parade takes place on public streets and is free of charge. No reservation required.
Arrive a little ahead of the parade start time: during the event, some streets in the center are closed to traffic, and parking near the squares fills up quickly. Dress in layers, as temperatures at the foot of the Lucretili Mountains can be chilly in February. For updated dates and times, it is advisable to check the official website and channels of the Municipality of Marcellina.
Marcellina has limited accommodation; a wider range of options can be found in Tivoli and Guidonia Montecelio, both less than twenty minutes away by car, or directly in Rome.
