The international cinema festival on the sea of Maratea
Marateale - Premio Internazionale Basilicata is the festival that transforms Maratea into a cinema capital every summer. For six days, the renowned Theatre on the Sea at the Hotel Santavenere, with its natural backdrop overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, hosts screenings, meetings, and awards ceremonies open to the public, fostering a constant dialogue between the big screen, the environment, and the territory.
The heart of the festival is the international feature film competition, dedicated to works addressing environmental and sustainability themes, aligning with the event's "green" vocation. Alongside, the Marateale in Short section selects ten Italian and international short films aimed at young filmmakers, while Marateale School showcases productions by Lucanian students focused on regional heritage and contemporary challenges. Confirming the competition's prestige, the winning short film of Marateale in Short, "In the Shadow of the Cypress," later won an Oscar for Best Animated Short Film.
Directed by Nicola Timpone with Antonella Caramia, Marateale attracts major Italian and international cinema figures year after year for masterclasses and meetings: from Carlo Verdone to Oliver Stone, from Rupert Everett to many other stars of the silver screen. For the public, it's an opportunity to experience cinema in a unique setting, immersed in the beauty of Maratea and the Province of Potenza, where Basilicata reveals its most glamorous and international face.
