The ancient May 1st rite in Val Canale
On May 1st, Malborghetto doesn't just celebrate Labour Day: an ancient rite rooted in the alpine traditions of central Europe is performed. It is the Festa della Maja, the raising of the Maypole, a symbol of nature's awakening, the earth's fertility, and the community's renewal.
The protagonists are the town's conscriptsโthe young people turning eighteenโwho take on the tradition each year: they transport the large tree in a procession, decorate it, and erect it in the village square. It is a handover between generations, a way of saying that the community is alive and continues.
The day follows a tried-and-tested ritual: the procession starts in the morning from the sports field and reaches the square around half past noon, when the food stalls open and the community lunch begins. In the early afternoon, the most anticipated moment: the raising of the Maja, the tree erected by sheer force of arms to the applause of the village. In case of bad weather, the festival is postponed.
Malborghetto is a hamlet of the municipality of Malborghetto-Valbruna, in the province of Udine, in the heart of Val Canale, in the far northeast of Italy. A tradition that tells the deepest soul of this valley.
