About Maja Festival

The Festa della Maja is the ancient spring rite of May 1st in Malborghetto, Val Canale: the town's conscripts carry the Maja tree in a procession and erect it in the square, celebrating the awakening of nature and the renewal of the community. A still-vibrant and heartfelt border alpine tradition, accompanied by food stalls and a festive atmosphere.

A tree, a village, a rite that is renewed

On May 1st, Malborghetto doesn't just celebrate Labour Day: an ancient rite rooted in the alpine traditions of central Europe is performed. It is the Festa della Maja, the raising of the Maypole, a symbol of nature's awakening, the earth's fertility, and the community's renewal.

The protagonists are the town's conscriptsโ€”the young people turning eighteenโ€”who take on the tradition each year: they transport the large tree in a procession, decorate it, and erect it in the village square. It is a handover between generations, a way of saying that the community is alive and continues.

The programme of a festive day

The day follows a tried-and-tested ritual: the procession starts in the morning from the sports field and reaches the square around half past noon, when the food stalls open and the community lunch begins. In the early afternoon, the most anticipated moment: the raising of the Maja, the tree erected by sheer force of arms to the applause of the village. In case of bad weather, the festival is postponed.

Malborghetto and Val Canale, a crossroads of cultures

Malborghetto is a hamlet of the municipality of Malborghetto-Valbruna, in the province of Udine, in the heart of Val Canale, in the far northeast of Italy. It is a borderland, where Italian, Slovenian, and Austro-German cultures have intertwined for centuries: this very border explains the survival of a rite, that of the Maja, widespread in the Germanic and Alpine world. A tradition that tells the deepest soul of this valley.
