Ballet under the stars at the Teatro del Mare, on the Amalfi Coast
Maiori Danza is the festival that every July transforms the Teatro del Mare in Maiori, in the heart of the Amalfi Coast, into a stage dedicated to movement. Promoted by the Municipality of Maiori (Province of Salerno, Campania) as part of the municipal summer program, the event brings together, over a few evenings, performances by local schools and an international-level event, the Dance Grand Gala.
The Teatro del Mare is set up on the pier of the Maiori tourist harbor and has about 500 seats. It is an open-air structure overlooking the water: behind the dancers are the lights of the harbor and the profile of the Lattari Mountains, and the evening breeze makes even the mid-July heat pleasant. The same space hosts, also in July, the Maiori Jazz & More festival, confirming how central it has become to the Municipality's cultural programming.
The most anticipated moment is the Dance Grand Gala, an evening entirely dedicated to classical ballet with stars and principal dancers from major European companies. For the 2026 edition, artistic direction is entrusted to maestro Andrey Lyapin and the guest of honor is Oksana Bondareva, gold medalist at the Moscow International Competition, performing alongside Vsevolod Maievskyi, Ganna Muromtseva, Vladislav Bosenko, Elisabetta Formento, Artemiy Pyzhov, Clara Ushizaka, and Leonardo De Checchi.
The evening's program traverses some of the most famous pages of the repertoire: the Rose Adagio from The Sleeping Beauty, the pas de deux from Swan Lake, Talisman, Carmen, Diana and Actaeon, The Dying Swan, and the Grand Pas de Deux from Don Quixote. A journey that, in just over an hour, allows even those who do not habitually attend theaters to understand why classical ballet continues to inspire.
Alongside the gala, Maiori Danza gives space to the entities that keep dance alive on the Coast all year round. The 2026 edition evenings:
These are performances built over the academic year, alternating classical, modern, and contemporary styles and involving students of all ages: for many local families, they are the summer appointment not to be missed, and for visitors, a direct way to get in touch with the life of the town.
The festival carries the legacy of the Maiori Grandi Eventi Dance Festival, an event that brought workshops, competitions, and shows for young dancers to Maiori. The 15th edition was held from July 10 to 17, 2016, with artistic direction by Roberta D'Amato and coordination by choreographer Marco Calogero, while the 19th edition was held in 2020. Alongside the evening shows, the historic festival offered classes in classical, contemporary, modern, and hip-hop, and a competition open to soloists, couples, and choreographic groups from emerging schools and companies.
Maiori Danza is one of the sections of the Municipality's summer program, which between June and September exceeds sixty appointments including music, jazz, theater, folk traditions, and major concerts at the tourist harbor amphitheater. The formula chosen by the administration is clear: almost all events are free, with online booking for limited-capacity spaces.
Maiori possesses the most extensive beach on the Amalfi Coast and lends itself well to a multi-day visit: the promenade on the seafront, Corso Reginna, the Sanctuary of Santa Maria a Mare with its majolica dome, Palazzo Mezzacapo and its gardens. From here, you can easily reach Minori, Amalfi, and Ravello, and the paths that climb towards the Lattari Mountains. A dance evening at the Teatro del Mare therefore combines easily with a day at the beach or an excursion, and remains one of the most elegant ways to experience summer in this stretch of Campania.
