The traditional carnival of Cannero Riviera, featuring knife grinders, masked parades, and the flavors of Lake Maggiore
Among the most beloved events in the winter calendar of Cannero Riviera, a town in the Province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola on the Piedmontese shore of Lake Maggiore, the Magnan Carnival is the festival that truly brings the whole village together. It is not a carnival of massive floats, but a warm, genuine local celebration where traditions, fine food, and the joy of masks blend into a single day of festivities.
The name of the event pays homage to the Magnan (the local dialect term for the itinerant knife grinder and tinsmith), figures who, until the early 20th century, traveled through the valleys and villages of the Verbano area carrying their grinding wheels to sharpen knives and scissors and repair copper pots. A humble, nomadic trade, the Magnan has become a symbol of identity in Cannero: the carnival preserves this memory and turns it into a gathering for the entire community.
The heart of the festival is the Pranzo del Magnano, served at noon on the terrace of the Cannero Lido, featuring a menu of traditional lakeside peasant cuisine: polenta, cod, sausage, and gorgonzola. In the early afternoon, the masked parade begins, winding through the streets of the historic center, followed by a comedy magic show designed for both adults and children, and a snack break with 'chiacchiere', the typical pastries of this season.
The day concludes with a masked ball at the historic Sala Pietro Carmine: an evening of dancing animated by the accordion of Gian Paolo Arfacchia, with a bar service available throughout the party. It is the moment when the Cannero community gathers to dance and toast together in the true spirit of carnival.
Part of the wider range of events in this lakeside village—also famous for its Citrus Festival and the mild microclimate that makes it a small corner of the Riviera in Piedmont—the Magnan Carnival is the perfect opportunity to discover Cannero Riviera in its most authentic and familiar dimension, far from the crowds of major tourist events.
Cannero Riviera is located on the Piedmontese shore of Lake Maggiore, along the SS34 state road between Verbania and Cannobio. By car, it can be reached from the A26 motorway (Verbania-Gravellona Toce exit), then continuing along the lake. By train, the nearest station is Verbania-Pallanza, from which you can continue by bus. In summer and during holiday periods, it is also served by Lake Maggiore ferry services.
Admission to the events is free; the 'Pranzo del Magnano' requires payment and booking is recommended. Bar service is available during the evening dance.
In case of bad weather, the lunch, show, and snack will be held at the Sant'Agnese oratory.
