Food and wine walk between the castles of the Enza Valley
The Magnalonga dei Due Castelli is a non-competitive food and wine walk that winds for about ten kilometers along the banks of the Enza river, the waterway that marks the natural border between the Reggio Emilia and Parma areas of Emilia. The route ideally connects two territories and two castles: that of the Municipality of Montecchio Emilia, in the province of Reggio Emilia, and the famous fortress of Montechiarugolo, in the province of Parma. The event, which was first held in 2026, is promoted by the Pro Loco of Montecchio Emilia and is conceived as a great celebration of volunteerism and local production realities.
The path is flat and suitable for everyone, including families with children. Along the way, you will cross some of the most picturesque places in the Enza Valley: the castle and village of Montecchio Emilia, the Chiesa Nuova overlooking the central square, Villa La Vignazza, the Romito oratory, and finally the village and fortress of Montechiarugolo. An itinerary that combines river landscape, Emilian countryside, and historical heritage, offering glimpses of the two manors that give the event its name.
The heart of the Magnalonga are the six food and wine stops set up along the route, where participants can taste and buy typical Emilian traditional flavors directly from producers. Water and fruit juices are available on request at all stops. The participation fee includes a glass with a shoulder strap, a control card, tastings along the walk, and a light meal.
More than just a walk, the Magnalonga dei Due Castelli is an opportunity for interaction between volunteer associations, Pro Loco committees, and local producers from both municipalities. Dogs on a leash are welcome, and the event takes place rain or shine. The initiative, located in Emilia-Romagna straddling the border with the Parma province, enhances the link between food and wine, landscape, and popular traditions of the lower Enza Valley.
The event debuted on Sunday, April 12, 2026, with a meeting and departure at 9:00 AM from the Marabù Social Center in Montecchio Emilia. Participants walked about ten kilometers on a flat route along the Enza river, to the village of Montechiarugolo, encountering along the way the castle of Montecchio, Villa La Vignazza, the Romito oratory, and the fortress of Montechiarugolo. The six food and wine stops offered typical products that could be purchased directly from producers. The debut was met with great participation, with tickets selling out quickly.
The meeting point is at the Marabù Social Center, in Via Fratelli Cervi 1 in Montecchio Emilia (RE). It is easily reachable by car from the SS9 Via Emilia and from the A1 motorway (Terre di Canossa-Campegine or Reggio Emilia exit). A dedicated camper area is available.
Registration is mandatory. Fees: 20 euros for adults, 15 euros for children aged 4 to 18, free for children under 4. For information: [email protected] or [email protected], tel. +39 329 6022963.
