The May 1st propitiatory rite and the Habitus Maiensis project
The Maggiolata of Castel del Giudice, a village in Alto Molise in the province of Isernia, is an ancient propitiatory rite linked to May 1st and the awakening of nature. According to tradition, a group of young people in costume, carrying beech branches, walk through the streets and knock on the doors of the village houses, singing the Maggiolata song to wish for a good harvest and the prosperity of the community.
In 2026, the Maggiolata is linked to the Habitus Maiensis project, which has brought back to light the traditional costumes of Castel del Giudice through accurate research and philological reconstruction. The women's costume is dominated by red, the color of married women, with finely crafted linen shirts, two overlapping bodices, a white petticoat, and a skirt; the men's costume includes a Mandarin-style shirt, overlapping waistcoats, and the gianberga, the main garment, in indigo.
The original costumes, never found due to the destruction of World War II, have been reconstructed based on historical sources and presented in a multimedia format, with podcasts, audio stories, illustrations, animations, and a musical reinterpretation of the Maggiolata song. An example of how a small municipality in Molise knows how to preserve and renew its identity.
The 2026 edition of the Maggiolata had a special significance thanks to the Habitus Maiensis project, presented in April 2026, which brought back to life the traditional costume of Castel del Giudice through philological reconstruction. On May 1st, the village renewed the ancient propitiatory rite: young people in costume paraded through the village streets and houses with beech branches, singing to wish for a good harvest.
The project presentation included multimedia materials (podcasts, audio stories, illustrations, and a musical reinterpretation of the song), enhancing the memory of the Alto Molise community.
The Habitus Maiensis project was publicly presented in April 2026, with the philological reconstruction of period costumes.
