The patrons of the truffle village

Known primarily for its truffles, San Pietro Avellana (province of Isernia) celebrates its patron saints, Peter and Paul, on June 29th, as per Catholic tradition. The inhabitants, the San Pietrese, gather around the figures of the two apostles with a solemn Mass and a procession through the village streets, an event that ideally opens the summer season for this Molise village.

A thousand years of history

The village's connection to Saint Peter dates back to the Benedictine monastery of San Pietro dell'Avellana, founded in the Middle Ages and becoming a dependency of Montecassino in the 11th century. This millennial history gives the patronal feast a strong identity value: celebrating Saints Peter and Paul means renewing the bond that links the community to its origins, in a region of upper Molise rich in nature and traditions.

A community festival

Despite its intimate nature, the festival is a moment of strong cohesion for the San Pietrese and for those who return to the village in the summer. The religious celebrations are accompanied by the typical moments of conviviality found in the patronal feasts of small Apennine villages, with music, illuminations, and community gatherings.
