About Solemnity of the Saints Martyrs

On May 15th, Larino honors its co-patron saints, the martyrs Primiano, Firmiano, and Casto, in the heart of the 'Maggio Larinese'. The day combines religious solemnity — a solemn Mass, confirmations, and a procession with relics — with the popular tradition of the Palii, long wooden poles with multicolored banners carried by children through the streets of the historic Frentan center.

Larino's Co-Patron Saints

The martyrs Primiano, Firmiano, and Casto are the co-patron saints of Larino and the entire Diocese of Termoli-Larino. Their solemnity, celebrated on May 15th, represents one of the most heartfelt moments in the religious calendar of the Frentan city, in the province of Campobasso. The cult, of early Christian origin, commemorates the martyrdom of the three saints during the persecutions of the early 4th century.

The Palii and Popular Tradition

Alongside the liturgical dimension, the festival retains a strong popular component: the procession of the Palii, long wooden poles adorned with multicolored banners carried by children through the streets of the historic center, in a colorful parade that involves entire families. The day concludes with civil shows in the piazza and fireworks from the Ducal Palace.

The 'Maggio Larinese'

The solemnity of the Martyrs is the core of the so-called 'Maggio Larinese', a month of rites and events that begins on May 3rd with the arrival of the statue of Saint Primiano in the city and culminates in the Carrese of San Pardo. A period that intertwines faith, community, and identity in the heart of Basso Molise.
