The summer patronal feast of the Immaculate Conception in the heart of Salento

The Madonna Nostra Summer Festival is the patronal feast with which the town of Carmiano, in the province of Lecce, celebrates its protector, the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Immaculate Conception. The intimate title of «Madonna Nostra» (Our Lady) is deeply rooted in local history: the community of Carmiano adopted this name to express a bond of affection and collective belonging to the Marian effigy housed in the Church of the Immaculate, the town's Mother Church, whose foundation stone was laid back in 1654.
In Carmiano, the patron saint is honored twice a year, according to a tradition already documented in the 1748 land registry: on December 8th, the day of the Immaculate Conception, and on the second Sunday of August, with the summer feast of patronage. The latter was established to welcome emigrant residents returning home during the summer and to invoke Marian protection over the harvest. The summer recurrence is also linked to the commemoration of September 3rd, a day of thanksgiving for the narrow escape from the 1943 bombing, an event that deeply marked the collective memory of this Salento town.
The most intense moment of the festivities is the solemn procession that winds through the streets of the historic center, starting from the Mother Church. The statue of the Virgin is carried on shoulders amidst the devotion of the faithful, accompanied by brass bands and the fireworks display that traditionally greets the statue's return to Piazza Assunta, the beating heart of the festival.
Alongside the religious rites, the secular program transforms Piazza Assunta and the surrounding streets into a large open-air stage: brass band concerts, musical shows, street performers, and dance evenings enliven the August nights. There is no shortage of exhibition stalls featuring local artisans in the historic center and tastings of wines and typical products of the Salento region, making this festival an opportunity to rediscover the flavors and crafts of tradition.
Organized by the «Madonna Nostra e San Vito Martire» Association together with the Ecclesial Community of Carmiano, with the patronage of the Municipality of Carmiano and the Province of Lecce, the festival is much more than a summer event: it is the moment when the entire community renews its Marian identity and social bonds around its patron saint, in a tapestry of faith, history, and popular culture that represents the most authentic soul of Salento and Puglia.
The detailed program for the 2026 Madonna Nostra Summer Festival in Carmiano has not yet been made public. The patronal feast, which honors the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Immaculate Conception, patron saint of the town, traditionally takes place on the second Sunday of August between the Mother Church and Piazza Assunta, featuring a solemn procession, brass band concerts, a fireworks display, and craft stalls. Information will be updated as soon as the «Madonna Nostra e San Vito Martire» Association and the Ecclesial Community of Carmiano release the official calendar.
The festivities take place in the historic center of Carmiano (LE), between the Mother Church of the Immaculate and Piazza Assunta.
