The religious and folk festival of the Villanesi district in Francavilla al Mare
The Madonna delle Grazie Festival is the religious and folk celebration of the Villanesi district, one of the hillside neighborhoods of Francavilla al Mare, in the province of Chieti, in the heart of the Adriatic Abruzzo region. Every year, the community gathers around the small church dedicated to Santa Maria delle Grazie and its surrounding park for an event that weaves together faith, tradition, and neighborhood social life.
The church in Villanesi is a neoclassical building with a single nave, a gabled facade, and a brick bell tower, overlooking a pine park that dominates the coast. The building was blessed on September 3, 1857, and stands on a hillside property linked to 19th-century events in the Francavilla area. After a long period of abandonment, the complex has returned to religious and cultural life thanks to the commitment of the community and the Le Franche Villanesi association, which since 2008 has promoted the restoration and reopening of the church and the enhancement of Parco Villanesi, a site that was even chosen as a film set in the 1930s.
The festival combines devotional aspects with conviviality and takes place over several days. The typical program includes:
It is a human-scale neighborhood festival, where the participation of residents and the volunteer work of the organizing committee remain the true driving force of the event.
Francavilla al Mare is a lively seaside resort on the Chieti coast, famous for its beaches, the painter Francesco Paolo Michetti, and its connection to the composer Paolo Tosti from Ortona. The Villanesi district, immersed in the hillside pine forest, retains an intimate and traditional identity: the Madonna delle Grazie festival is its most authentic expression, an appointment that renews the sense of belonging to the community of the Municipality of Francavilla al Mare every year.
The Madonna delle Grazie Festival in Villanesi was held on July 1, 2, and 3, 2026, in Francavilla al Mare (CH). The organizing committee released the program for the event, which, as per tradition, intertwined moments of devotion — Holy Masses, recitation of the Rosary, and the procession with the image of the Virgin — with festive evenings in the park and the small square of the church. Three days that renewed the most heartfelt appointment of the Villanesi district.
The festival is held at the church and Park of the Madonna delle Grazie, in the Villanesi district of Francavilla al Mare (CH), on the hill overlooking the Adriatic coast.
By car: take the Francavilla/Pescara Sud exit from the A14 motorway, then head towards the hillside districts. By train: Francavilla al Mare station on the Adriatic line, then transfer to the Villanesi area. The nearest airport is Pescara-Abruzzo.
