Every May, the small village of Artena, perched in the Lepini Mountains in the province of Rome, unites in its most heartfelt devotion: the Madonna delle Grazie Festival. The heart of the festivities is the solemn procession held on the Saturday preceding the third Sunday of May, which winds through the entire historic center, carrying the effigy of the Virgin in triumph.

The Cristi Infiorati: a unique art form

What makes this festival truly unique are the famous Cristi Infiorati: large statues of Christ entirely decorated with freshly gathered wildflowers, crafted by the Infioratori of local confraternities. These are not mere decorations, but true ephemeral works of art, composed petal by petal using only field flowers. Carried on the shoulders of the confreres, these heavy processional structures navigate a four-kilometer route filled with climbs, descents, and narrow passages through the medieval alleys. The festival dates back to 1731 and has continued uninterrupted, passed down through generations by the town's confraternities. The custom of adorning the Christs with flowers began in the mid-19th century and has since become the event's defining feature. The procession is accompanied by confraternities with their banners, the local town band, and the flag-wavers and musicians of Artena, who add color and solemnity to the pageant.
