The August festival in Galugnano, featuring devotion, illuminations, and fireworks
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Madonna della Neve Festival is the most cherished summer event in Galugnano, the only hamlet of the municipality of San Donato di Lecce, in the heart of central Salento, in the province of Lecce (Puglia). Just a few kilometers from the main city of Salento, this small village of just over a thousand inhabitants comes to a standstill in the first ten days of August to pay homage to the Virgin, venerated as Madonna della Neve, whose liturgical feast falls on August 5th.
The spiritual heart of the festival is the small church of Madonna della Neve, a medieval jewel nestled in the countryside of the Pisanei district, among ancient olive trees and tall dry-stone walls. Once known as Santa Maria de li Pisanei, it preserves a Romanesque core and frescoes from the 14th and 15th centuries depicting saints such as Saint John the Baptist, Saint Catherine of Alexandria, and Saint Anthony of Padua. On its walls, one can find graffiti and even a Greek welcome inscription (Kalos รฌrtate), a testament to the historical presence of the Greek rite in Salento.
The festival combines the sacred and the secular, following the typical model of Puglian patronal feasts. Religious celebrations, with Holy Mass and the procession of the Virgin's effigy through the village streets, mark the days of devotion for the community of Galugnano, organized by the local Festival Committee.
At dusk, the village transforms: illuminations light up the streets, the brass band concert enlivens the square with the classic repertoire of Salento festivals, and popular music accompanies the evening conviviality with shows and entertainment. As per tradition, the festivities conclude with a fireworks display, the most anticipated moment that draws residents and visitors from neighboring towns.
The Madonna della Neve Festival is also an opportunity to discover San Donato di Lecce and its hamlet, awarded the title of 'City of Art' in 2019, and to experience the genuine atmosphere of a Salento village festival, far from the main tourist circuits.
The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced: we recommend following the Galugnano Festival Committee channels for updates.
The dates and detailed program for the 2026 edition of the Madonna della Neve Festival in Galugnano have not yet been published. Updates on the program will be released by the Galugnano Festival Committee on their official social media channels.
