The August 5th sea procession between Conca dei Marini, Amalfi, and Atrani
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
With just over seven hundred inhabitants, Conca dei Marini is one of the most intimate towns on the Amalfi Coast, in the province of Salerno, Campania. White houses clinging to the cliffs, staircases instead of streets, a fjord, and a tiny marina: this is where the Madonna della Neve Festival is held every August 5th, one of the most cherished Marian traditions on the entire Amalfi Coast.
This is not a tourist-driven event, but a true community celebration belonging to the local people: families of sailors, fishermen, and seafarers who have entrusted their departures and returns to the Virgin for centuries.
The highlight is the sea procession. After the solemn mass celebrated on the beach of Marina di Conca, the statue of the Madonna is embarked and accompanied by a procession of boats that sails along the coast: tradition dictates a passage in front of Amalfi and Atrani, a loop around the Capo di Conca promontory, and finally the return to the starting beach.
It is a liturgy that unfolds between sky and water, marked by the tolling of bells, the sound of the brass band, and—as darkness falls—fireworks reflecting on the sea. Those watching from land gather on the beach and along the winding roads; those who can, follow the procession by boat.
The Marian title refers to an ancient episode: legend tells that on August 5, 358 AD, in Rome, a miraculous snowfall on the Esquiline Hill marked the perimeter of the basilica that would become Santa Maria Maggiore. From this event comes the liturgical feast of the Dedicatio Sanctae Mariae ad Nives, celebrated throughout Italy on August 5th, and in Conca dei Marini, it is uniquely linked to the seafaring community.
The village preserves several churches and chapels: San Giovanni Battista, San Pancrazio, Santa Maria di Grado, and San Michele Arcangelo. However, the symbolic site of the festival is the small chapel of the Madonna della Neve, carved into the rock just steps from the beach of Marina di Conca and long considered the sailors' own sanctuary.
Surrounding the religious core is the secular celebration: the brass band concert accompanying the liturgical moments, live music on the beach to end the evening, the distribution of blessed bread, and groups of people gathering along the marina. It is the typical coastal blend of devotion and conviviality, where the procession ends and the party begins.
The feast falls on August 5th, in the height of the summer season: the Coast is crowded, traffic on the main road is heavy, and parking spots in Conca dei Marini are extremely limited. Those who want to experience the sea procession without stress should arrive in the early afternoon and plan to use public transport or arrive by sea from Amalfi.
The Madonna della Neve Festival is a well-established annual event in Conca dei Marini, on the Amalfi Coast in the province of Salerno. At the time of publication of this entry, however, no official document regarding the 2026 edition has been found: no flyer, no program, and no confirmation of the schedule.
Based on tradition, the day revolves around the solemn mass celebrated on the beach of Marina di Conca and the subsequent sea procession, with the statue of the Madonna embarked and accompanied by a flotilla of boats along the coast. None of this, however, can be considered confirmed for 2026 until the official program is released.
Those wishing to participate are invited to contact the parish of Conca dei Marini or the municipal offices directly in the days leading up to August 5th.
By car: SS163 Amalfitana road, between Amalfi and Praiano; parking is very limited, so it is recommended to leave your car in Amalfi. By bus: SITA Sud lines from Amalfi, Positano, and Sorrento, stop along the main road in Conca dei Marini, then walk down to the marina. By sea: seasonal connections from the port of Amalfi.
Celebrations and the sea procession are open to the public and free of charge.
Wear comfortable shoes: there are many stairs to descend to reach Marina di Conca from the main road. Arrive well in advance to find a spot on the beach, bring water, and check updated schedules at the parish or the Municipality of Conca dei Marini before traveling.
