Faith, tradition, and flavors in the heart of Cocumola

In the heart of lower Salento, the Madonna dell'Uragano Fair is one of the most cherished events in Cocumola, a small and lively village in the municipality of Minervino di Lecce, in the province of Lecce (Puglia). Every year, around the second Sunday of September, the streets of the historic center fill with authentic scents, colors, and flavors: the community gathers to experience a few intense days of faith, culture, and popular tradition.
The devotion is rooted in an episode passed down for nearly two centuries. It is said that on September 10, 1832, while farmers were in the fields, a violent wind—called scarcagnulo in the local dialect—began to devastate the area. According to tradition, an evanescent female figure appeared, standing between the typhoon and the village with her arms open in a flash of light. The storm ceased abruptly and Cocumola remained unharmed, while neighboring towns suffered severe damage. Since then, the community has venerated the Madonna dell'Uragano, to whom a statue kept in the local church is dedicated.
The festival combines religious moments, with celebrations and a procession in honor of the Madonna, with a rich secular program that transforms the village into a large open-air fair. For several decades, the event has been enriched by the 'Strade in Fiera' exhibition, a journey through the streets of Cocumola dedicated to rediscovering local history, devotion, and traditions.
Participating in the Madonna dell'Uragano Fair means immersing yourself in the most authentic soul of inland Salento, far from crowded tourist destinations. Cocumola, with its courtyards, stone houses, and the Church of the Madonna Assunta, preserves a community tradition that comes alive every September thanks to the commitment of the inhabitants and local associations. Admission to the events is free, in a festive atmosphere that welcomes residents, returning emigrants, and visitors from all over the province of Lecce.
The Madonna dell'Uragano Fair returns to Cocumola, a hamlet of Minervino di Lecce, to renew the devotion to the Virgin and the tradition of the September fair. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced: the event is expected, as every year, around the second Sunday of September, with religious celebrations, 'Strade in Fiera', tastings of typical Salento products, crafts, and live music. The full program will be published by the organizers in the weeks preceding the event.
