The Grande Ottobrata of Torremaggiore

The Madonna del Rosario Festival is one of the most deeply rooted devotional events in Torremaggiore, a town in the Alto Tavoliere of the Foggia province, in the heart of Daunian Puglia. Known to locals as the Grande Ottobrata, the celebration accompanies the community for nearly three weeks, from late September to mid-October, blending religious observance with the festive spirit typical of major Southern Italian patronal feasts.

A devotion preserved since 1694

The organizational heart of the festival is the Arciconfraternita del Rosario, a brotherhood active in Torremaggiore since 1694 and the long-standing guardian of this Marian tradition. The confraternity is based in the Church of Sant'Anna, built in 1701 as the chapel of the De Sangro family, where the venerated statue of the Madonna del Rosario, dating back to 1690, is kept. During the festival, the statue is moved to the town's Mother Church, which becomes the center of all celebrations.

Novena, Supplica, and processions

The program begins with the arrival of the Madonna and the Saints at the Mother Church and continues with the solemn novena, marked each evening by the Holy Rosary, Mass with sermons, and communal prayers led by the Arciconfraternita. The most intense moment occurs on October 7th, the feast day, when the Supplica to the Queen of the Holy Rosary is recited at noon, a prayer linked to the memory of the Battle of Lepanto. The devotion is complemented by themed days dedicated to youth, children, and vocations.

The popular festival

Alongside the religious aspects, the Grande Ottobrata offers the typical features of a Puglian village festival: morning firecracker displays, folk music concerts, food stalls run by local associations, illuminations lighting up the historic center, and spectacular pyrotechnic batterie. The solemn procession featuring the Madonna del Rosario and numerous Saints winding through the streets of Torremaggiore is the highlight that unites the entire community before the moving return of the statue to the Church of Sant'Anna.
