Every summer in Boscoreale, a town in the Province of Naples lying at the foot of Mount Vesuvius, the Madonna del Carmine Patronal Feast marks one of the most significant moments in the local civil and religious calendar. Around July 16th, the day the Church celebrates the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel, the entire community unites around the venerated image of the Madonna in a celebration that weaves together Marian devotion, folk tradition, and a deep sense of belonging.
The Madonna del Carmine is among the most beloved Marian figures in Southern Italy, and in Boscoreale, her veneration has been deeply rooted for generations. The festivities are preceded by a novena, nine days of spiritual preparation with evening services that lead the faithful toward the feast day. The highlight is the Solemn Holy Mass, celebrated in the church dedicated to the Virgin, followed by the evocative procession where the statue of the Madonna del Carmine is carried through the main streets of the town, accompanied by hymns, prayers, and the participation of local confraternities.
Alongside the religious rites, the Boscoreale patronal feast comes alive with a festive, convivial spirit. Illuminations light up the town center, brass bands provide a musical backdrop to the solemn moments, while stalls and markets offer sweets, toys, and local products. The evenings are filled with live music and entertainment, culminating in a fireworks display that, according to tradition, pays tribute to the Madonna and closes the festivities in a blaze of light.
Located in the Province of Naples, in the Campania region, Boscoreale is renowned for its archaeological site—the Roman rustic villas and the Antiquarium that recount the agricultural life of the ancient Vesuvian area—and for its winemaking heritage. The patronal feast is the moment when this identity as a hardworking, land-linked town is expressed in its most authentic form, bringing families together and attracting visitors and pilgrims from across the Vesuvian area and Campania.
Organized by the parish community with the support of the Municipality of Boscoreale, the festival is free and open to the public. It is an experience designed for everyone, adults and children alike, offering a chance to experience one of the most heartfelt religious and folk traditions of the Vesuvian territory.
In 2026, Boscoreale once again prepares to celebrate its Madonna del Carmine with rites passed down through generations. The festivities center around July 16th, the liturgical feast day of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel, and are preceded by the novena. The most solemn moment remains the procession of the Virgin's statue through the town center, accompanied by confraternities and brass bands, while the evenings come alive with markets, live music, and entertainment, culminating in the traditional fireworks display.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition has not yet been released by the parish and organizers. Based on previous editions, the festivities generally include:
