Two days of faith, tradition, and fireworks in the heart of the Cilento hinterland
The Madonna del Carmelo Festival is one of the most anticipated events of the summer in Piaggine, a village of just over a thousand inhabitants in the province of Salerno, in the heart of the Cilento hinterland, Campania. Every year, around July 15th and 16th, the town renews a tradition that, according to local chronicles, has been passed down for more than five centuries: the cult of the Virgin of Mount Carmel, one of the most deeply rooted Marian devotions in Southern Italy, celebrated on the liturgical date of July 16th.
In Cilento, this celebration is widespread—from Agropoli to Pioppi, from Gioi to Catona di Ascea—but in Piaggine, it takes on a particularly intimate and communal character, coinciding with the time when the village repopulates: those who left for work return to their families for the feast, and the streets of the historic center fill with different generations.
Lying along the Calore River at an altitude of about 630 meters, Piaggine is one of the highest municipalities in the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park, protected by the mass of Mount Cervati, the highest peak in Campania at 1,899 meters. The village was founded in the Middle Ages around a Benedictine monastery and is now a classic starting point for high-altitude hiking, amidst beech forests, springs, and trails.
The Church of the Madonna del Carmine, which gives the festival its name, houses a polyptych depicting the Immaculate Conception surrounded by Franciscan saints, painted in the first half of the 17th century by Pietrafesa: a small art treasure that testifies to how ancient the Carmelite cult is in the village.
As is the case in much of Cilento, the festivities combine two spirits. The first is liturgical, with traditional celebrations and rites dedicated to the Madonna del Carmelo, the spiritual heart of the two days. The second is civil and convivial, occupying the evenings of July 15th and 16th: illuminations in the town center, stalls selling sweets and local products, and live music in the village bars and squares.
The most anticipated moment remains the traditional fireworks display, which in Piaggine historically accompanies both the Carmelo feast and the feast of Santa Filomena: the fireworks over the rooftops of the village, with the silhouette of Mount Cervati in the background, are the iconic image of the festival.
The Carmelo festivities effectively open the summer season of the municipality, which publishes a calendar full of events until the end of August each year. In the 2026 edition, for example, the July 15-16 festival was followed by dance and popular theater performances on Corso Sayalonga—a street named after the Andalusian town twinned with Piaggine—the historic Coppa Cervati, the Madonna della Neve festivities on Mount Cervati in early August, the Porcini Mushroom Festival, and the feast of Santa Filomena.
The festival is also an opportunity to taste the mountain cuisine of Cilento, which is very different from the coastal fare: homemade pasta such as cavatielli (to which the village dedicates a festival in August), meats, goat and sheep cheeses, porcini mushrooms from Mount Cervati, and homemade desserts. In the village bars and restaurants, during the festival evenings, people eat until late.
The two best evenings are July 15th and 16th, when rites, music, and fireworks are concentrated. Visitors from outside the area can combine the festival with a hike on Mount Cervati or a visit to the nearby villages of the Cilento hinterland—Sanza, Laurino, Valle dell'Angelo—for a weekend away from the coastal crowds.
The Municipality of Piaggine presented the full calendar of summer events at the beginning of July, a program ranging from religious commemorations to live music, from cultural promotion to the enhancement of typical Cilento products. Opening it were the Madonna del Carmelo Festival, on July 15th and 16th, 2026.
The two days followed the established pattern of the festival: the traditional religious rites in honor of the Virgin of Carmel, the spiritual heart of the event, and the street party in the evenings, with illuminations, stalls, and music. The musical portion was entrusted to an evening hosted by Bar Scascio with a performance by the group «I Seduzione Sonora».
Immediately after, the Piaggine calendar continued without pause: on July 18th with the recital show by Giusy Comunale – Dance Academy, on July 19th with the theatrical performance «Tammurriata Nera» by the «I Pappici» Theater Company at the Pro Loco headquarters on Corso Sayalonga, and from July 29th with the 45th edition of the historic Coppa Cervati.
All events took place in public spaces in the village, with free admission.
The exact times of individual events were not released in the municipality's press release.
By car: from the A2 del Mediterraneo motorway, take the Sicignano degli Alburni or Petina exit, then follow the SS166 degli Alburni and provincial roads towards Piaggine (about 1 hour and 30 minutes from the motorway exit). From Salerno, it is about 100 km. The village is about 150 km from Naples.
By train: the most convenient stations are Vallo della Lucania-Castelnuovo and Sapri, on the Tyrrhenian line; from there, you must continue by bus or rental car, as Piaggine is located in the mountainous hinterland.
By bus: intercity connections from Salerno and Vallo della Lucania; services are reduced on public holidays, so check the timetables before departing.
The festivities take place in public spaces (church, squares, and streets of the historic center) and admission is free, including musical evenings and the fireworks display. Only food and drinks at bars, restaurants, and stalls are paid.
