About Madonna dei Monti

Every year in late April, the Monti district gathers around its Madonna. The Madonna dei Monti Patronal Feast commemorates the miracle of April 26, 1579, when a 15th-century fresco of the Virgin and Child began to be venerated as miraculous. A procession through the district's narrow streets, the gift of the chalice from the City of Rome, a solemn mass, and a choral concert mark a day that blends popular devotion, historical memory, and neighborhood life in the heart of the Capital.

A feast born from a 1579 miracle

The Madonna dei Monti Patronal Feast is one of the most deep-rooted traditions in the historic center of Rome, in the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, in the Lazio region. It all began on April 26, 1579, when in an old abandoned monastery in the Monti district, then used as a hay storage, a 15th-century fresco depicting the Virgin and Child between Saints Stephen and Lawrence became the object of sudden and overwhelming devotion. Word of the healings attributed to the image spread throughout the city, and Pope Gregory XIII commissioned the architect Giacomo della Porta to build a church worthy of housing it.

Thus, starting in 1580, the Church of Santa Maria ai Monti was born, the second Jesuit church after the Gesรน and an architectural model replicated throughout the Catholic world. Since then, the district community has celebrated its patron saint every year with a celebration that does not remain confined within the parish walls, but spills out into the streets, involving the entire neighborhood.

The Monti district in celebration

Monti is the first district of Rome, a maze of alleys between the Imperial Forums and Santa Maria Maggiore that has preserved a village-like identity within the metropolis. On the day of the feast, this dimension becomes evident: shops slow their pace, residents are invited to decorate the balconies of the streets crossed by the procession, and traffic is suspended for a few hours in the most characteristic streets of the district.

The central moment is the procession, which starts from the church on Via della Madonna dei Monti and returns there after passing through Via Urbana, Via Panisperna, Piazza and Via degli Zingari, Via del Boschetto, and Vicolo and Via dei Serpenti. It is a short but highly evocative route, among ocher facades, sacred shrines, and fountains, which captures the image of a popular Rome that has survived mass tourism.

The bond with the city

One gesture makes this feast different from many other parish anniversaries: the gift of the chalice by the Capitoline administration, which renews the official bond between the city of Rome, its people, and the miraculous Madonna every year. It is a civic tribute of ancient origin, testifying to how deeply the devotion of Monti has historically been felt far beyond the district's borders.

Sacred music and choral singing

The day concludes with a choral concert in the church's liturgical hall, a moment that adds a cultural offering to the devotional dimension, open even to those not participating in the rites. The repertoire, of sacred inspiration, enhances the acoustics of the 16th-century building and attracts an audience of enthusiasts every year.

What to see during the feast

  • The miraculous image of the Virgin and Child, the heart of the devotion, displayed on the high altar
  • The frescoes by Cristoforo Casolani and the stuccoes decorating the single nave
  • The facade with two orders of pilasters and side volutes, a clear citation of the Church of the Gesรน
  • The district streets decorated for the passage of the procession
  • Piazza della Madonna dei Monti with its fountain, the neighborhood's meeting point

A free event open to all

Participation in all moments of the feast is free and open to everyone. No reservation is required: just be in the district on the afternoon of the feast Sunday. It is a precious opportunity for those visiting Rome who wish to encounter an authentic tradition, far from the most beaten tourist paths, and for Romans who want to rediscover a piece of their city's history.

Madonna dei Monti โ€” edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the patronal feast fell exactly on the anniversary of the miracle: Sunday, April 26, 447 years after 1579. An intense afternoon involved the Church of Santa Maria ai Monti and the entire district, with the gift of the chalice by the city administration, the procession through the alleys of Monti, the solemn mass presided over by Cardinal Francesco Coccopalmerio, and a final choral concert in the liturgical hall.

Sunday, April 26, 2026

A rare and deeply felt coincidence for the residents of Monti: in 2026, the Sunday of the feast fell exactly on April 26, the precise day in 1579 when the fresco of the Virgin began to be venerated as miraculous. The program, curated by the parish led by Monsignor Francesco Pesce, took place entirely in the afternoon.

At 5:20 PM, the municipal administration renewed the traditional gift of the chalice, a gesture that seals the bond between the city of Rome and its Madonna. At 5:30 PM, the procession began, with Cardinal Francesco Coccopalmerio, along Via Urbana, Via Panisperna, Piazza and Via degli Zingari, Via del Boschetto, and Vicolo and Via dei Serpenti, returning to the church. At 7:00 PM, the solemn mass, also presided over by the Cardinal, took place, and at 8:30 PM, the choral concert in the liturgical hall concluded the day. Residents had been invited to decorate the balconies of the streets crossed by the procession.
