The Living Nativity in the heart of Rome

During the Advent season, the Papal Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in the Esquilino district becomes the stage for one of the most cherished Christmas events in Rome's historic center: the Rome Living Nativity. This grand, free-to-attend Nativity procession brings a living testament of the Italian nativity tradition—guarded by the Church since Saint Francis created the first one in Greccio in 1223—to the streets and squares of the district.

A procession through the Esquilino

The heart of the event is the itinerant procession that begins in the early afternoon from the streets near the basilica—starting from Largo Sant'Alfonso Maria de' Liguori and Via Merulana—to cross Piazza dell'Esquilino, Via dell'Esquilino, and Via Liberiana, reaching the area in front of Santa Maria Maggiore. For the occasion, traffic is closed along the route and several bus lines are diverted, transforming the district into a large open-air stage.

Fifteen hundred participants from all over Italy

The event brings together over 1,500 participants from every corner of Italy: parishes, historical and folk groups, associations, and local organizations bring the costumes, crafts, and traditions of their respective regions to the Capital. Shepherds, artisans, commoners, and Nativity characters bring to life a choral fresco that unites the diverse spirits of the country around the symbol of the nativity scene.

The «Bethlehem of the West»

The choice of Santa Maria Maggiore is no coincidence: the Liberian basilica is known as the «Bethlehem of the West» because it houses the relics of the Holy Crib, the wooden fragments venerated as the manger of Bethlehem. The Nativity representation thus concludes in a context of prayer and contemplation, with a Eucharistic celebration inside the basilica.

An event for the city and families

Promoted by the Terre di Presepi Foundation together with the Papal Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, the Rome Living Nativity is a free event open to all, particularly beloved by families and children. In the Municipality of Rome, the capital of the Lazio region, it represents one of the moments where the religious dimension of Christmas intertwines with folklore and popular traditions, offering Romans and visitors a festive occasion in the monumental heart of the Capital.
