The Lucanian community of Genoa celebrates its Madonna with devotion, flavors, and traditions from the South
The Madonna d'Anglona Celebrations are the most important event for the large Lucanian community in Genoa, which each year celebrates its patron saint in Cornigliano, a district in the western part of the city, at the Giardini Melis. The Madonna d'Anglona is venerated in the sanctuary of the same name in Tursi, Basilicata, and her Genoese festival keeps alive the bond of Lucanian emigrants with their homeland.
The convivial heart of the festival are the stalls with Lucanian specialties: typical products from Basilicata take center stage, offering Genoese people the chance to discover a rich and authentic cuisine. The festival often integrates with the Cornigliano fair, in an atmosphere of great popular participation.
Alongside the gastronomic and musical dimension, with evenings of music and dancing and sports performances, the festival retains its religious core. The culminating moment is the procession through the streets of Cornigliano, accompanied by the Confraternities, the Filarmonica Cornigliano, and the Gruppo Storico Sestrese, and the solemn Mass at the parish church of San Giacomo.
The festival is also an opportunity to renew the friendship between Genoa and Tursi, with cultural, tourist, and commercial initiatives that unite the two communities. A beautiful and concrete example of how traditions from the South continue to live and integrate into the fabric of western Genoa.
The 2026 edition of the Madonna d'Anglona Celebrations is held from May 30 to June 2 at the Giardini Melis in Cornigliano, Genoa. The festival of the Lucanian community offers stalls with Basilicata specialties, musical evenings, and sports performances.
The religious culmination is on June 2, with the procession through the streets of Cornigliano accompanied by the Confraternities, the Filarmonica Cornigliano, and the Gruppo Storico Sestrese, and the solemn Mass at 6:00 PM at the parish church of San Giacomo.
Cornigliano is reachable by train (Genova Cornigliano station) and by AMT buses from the center of Genoa. The Giardini Melis are located in the heart of the district.
