About Lunigiana Cinema Festival

Every summer, the Lunigiana Cinema Festival brings the village of Fivizzano, in the Tuscan region of Lunigiana, to life with three days of screenings, presentations, discussions, and concerts. Short films, documentaries, books, and music intertwine around three core themes: the environment, human rights, and the protection of the territory. Hosted in the evocative setting of the San Giovanni degli Agostiniani Garden and Museum, the festival is free to attend and offers a program designed to move, inspire, and engage audiences of all ages.

Three days of cinema, words, and music in Fivizzano

The Lunigiana Cinema Festival is one of the most cherished cultural events of the summer in Lunigiana, the northernmost corner of Tuscany in the Province of Massa-Carrara. The event takes place in the Municipality of Fivizzano, an ancient and noble town along the Via Francigena, and for three days transforms the San Giovanni degli Agostiniani Garden and Museum on Via Umberto I into an open-air stage dedicated to auteur cinema and civic engagement.

A multidisciplinary festival

The festival is more than just cinema: every edition weaves together screenings of short films and documentaries, book presentations, live musical performances, and meetings with directors, writers, authors, and artists. The common thread is a desire to tell stories that inspire, move, and provoke thought, giving voice to pressing contemporary issues.

Environment, human rights, and the territory

The heart of the festival revolves around three major issues: environmental protection, the defense of human rights, and respect for the territory and the communities that inhabit it. The film competition, open to Italian and international directors, is divided into three categories:

  • Short film (open theme)
  • Short film (environmental theme)
  • Short film (human rights theme)

A jury awards prizes for the best short film in each category, along with special mentions and the "Voci del Territorio" (Voices of the Territory) award. Selected works are screened during the festival evenings, often in the presence of the filmmakers.

A setting to discover

The choice of the San Giovanni degli Agostiniani Garden and Museum gives the event an intimate and evocative atmosphere, perfect for evening screenings and public discussions. Fivizzano, with its monumental square and historical heritage linked to printing and culture, provides the ideal backdrop for an event that unites art, nature, and social commitment.

An event for everyone

Admission to all events is free, confirming the popular and inclusive spirit of the festival, which is organized by the Municipality of Fivizzano in collaboration with the Passi Paesi e Parole association. Between a screening and a debate, the public can experience the Lunigiana summer by discovering an authentic village and high-quality cultural programming that, while away from the mainstream circuits, is rich in content and perspectives on the modern world.
