Street theatre arrives in Nole, in the heart of the Canavese region, under the July stars
Every summer, Lunathica, the International Street Theatre Festival of the Canavese region, steps out of traditional performance venues to bring theatre directly to the people. Among the seven municipalities hosting this widespread festival is Nole, a small town in the Metropolitan City of Turin, Piedmont, which turns into an open-air stage for several July evenings. Founded in the early 2000s and organized by the Associazione Culturale I Lunatici, Lunathica is now one of the most popular performing arts events in the area.
In Nole, the performances animate the town center: Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II and Piazza Resistenza host acrobatics, clowning, dance, and comedy, inviting visitors to explore the village on foot. This is the festival's signature formula: no grand theatres, but rather the streets and squares of the town becoming a meeting place for artists and the public. Walking from one square to another, you will encounter contemporary circus acts, comedy, and wonder, in an atmosphere of widespread celebration that involves both residents and visitors.
Each year, the artistic direction selects the best of the European street theatre scene, featuring numerous national and regional premieres and true Italian debuts. Over the years, Nole has hosted companies from Spain, Argentina, Austria, and many other countries, alongside Italian artists. Circus, acrobatics, clowning, and dance alternate throughout the evenings, always maintaining the quality and originality that have made Lunathica a benchmark in the sector.
One of Lunathica's hallmarks is that it is free: all main program shows are open to the public, a choice that makes culture accessible to families, children, and anyone looking to spend an evening differently. For Nole and the entire Canavese area in the Province of Turin, Lunathica has become a summer ritual that unites local identity with the international spirit of street theatre.
Nole is located about 25 km north of Turin, in the Ciriacese area. By car: from Turin, take the SP1 towards Lanzo and exit towards Nole (approx. 35 minutes). By train: the nearest station served by the Metropolitan Railway Service is Ciriè (line SFM1 Turin–Ceres), just a few minutes' drive from Nole.
All shows in the main program are free. No reservation is required, but arriving early for the most popular performances is recommended.
Performances in Nole take place in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II and Piazza Resistenza: it is advisable to check the program for times and locations and to walk between the squares. Bring comfortable shoes and a light sweater for the evenings.
