About Lumignano Pea Festival

The Lumignano Pea Festival celebrates one of the most prized products of the Berici Hills: the "bisi", De.Co. peas cultivated in the terraced walls at the foot of the Lumignano rock face, a hamlet of Longare in the province of Vicenza. For five days, the village comes alive with evening food stalls, typical dishes like the famous 'risi e bisi', music, and sports events, in a celebration that intertwines peasant tradition, history, and the flavors of the Berici territory.

The bisi, green gold of the Berici Hills

The Lumignano Pea Festival is dedicated to a product with an ancient history: the bisi, peas cultivated in Lumignano, a hamlet of the municipality of Longare, in the province of Vicenza. These legumes grow in the characteristic masiere, the terraced gardens at the foot of the Lumignano rock face, where – according to the tradition introduced by Benedictine monks in the medieval era – the sun-warmed rock favors such early ripening that peas were once sent to Venice for the Doge's banquet on St. Mark's Day, April 25th.

A De.Co. that tells a story of territory

The excellence of Lumignano peas is recognized by the De.Co. (Denominazione Comunale), which protects their historical and cultural value. The signature dish is risi e bisi, a semi-liquid spring risotto rich in peas, but the festival also offers numerous other preparations of traditional Venetian cuisine.

Five days of celebration

The event enlivens Lumignano for five days with:

  • Evening food stalls with typical dishes based on bisi
  • Live music and entertainment
  • Sports events and community initiatives
  • Table reservations for the evenings

An event that, riding the wave of renewed interest in typical products, has brought back into the spotlight a historic cultivation of the terraced landscape of the Berici Hills.
