The festival for children and teenagers in Campi Bisenzio and the Florence Plains
For over thirty years, Luglio Bambino has been transforming the squares, gardens, and streets of Campi Bisenzio, in the Metropolitan City of Florence (Province of Florence, Tuscany), into a grand stage tailored for children. Promoted by the Municipality of Campi Bisenzio and directed by the Fondazione Accademia dei Perseveranti, it is one of the longest-running and most popular children's festivals in Tuscany: an event that families look forward to all year round, filling summer evenings with theatre, laughter, and wonder.
The heart of the festival is live performance designed for young audiences: puppet theatre, clowns, marionettes, contemporary circus, musical theatre, and animated readings. Alongside the stage, there is a whole world of creative workshops—from calligraphy to papier-mâché, wooden games to treasure hunts, and even astronomical observation and planting workshops—that invite children to create, experiment, and imagine. Each edition features various national premieres, new productions, and often under-35 companies, a testament to a festival that invests in young artists.
Over the years, Luglio Bambino has grown to embrace the entire Florence Plains: the "Luglio Metropolitano" section brings shows to Sesto Fiorentino, Calenzano, Signa, Lastra a Signa, Scandicci, Greve in Chianti, and Districts 4 and 5 of Florence, while the core of the event remains in Campi Bisenzio. It is a network of over forty associations and local cultural entities that, together, build a widespread and free offering.
The shows are primarily dedicated to children aged 3 to 12, but the festival knows how to speak to the whole family: grandparents, parents, and children share the same squares and the same stories. Most events are free; for evening shows, a small symbolic contribution is requested. Between a museum visit and a treasure hunt, Luglio Bambino is the most beautiful way to experience summer, child-sized, in the territory of Campi Bisenzio and Tuscany.
The 32nd edition of Luglio Bambino, from 6 to 19 July 2026, has as its theme "Imagination! Without borders!", dedicated to the dialogue between generations and the relationship between imagination, transmission of knowledge, and participation. Scheduled are 75 events in 8 municipalities, with over 40 associations involved. The event is promoted by the Municipality of Campi Bisenzio and directed by the Fondazione Accademia dei Perseveranti, with the support of the Tuscany Region and the Metropolitan City of Florence. Among this year's novelties is the collaboration with the Viareggio Carnival Foundation for papier-mâché theatre workshops.
The first part of the festival crosses the Florence Plains: Signa, Lastra a Signa, Sesto Fiorentino, Calenzano, Scandicci, Greve in Chianti, and Districts 4 and 5 of Florence, with shows and workshops spread across the territory.
From 15 to 19 July, the centre of the event moves to Campi Bisenzio with 55 free events dedicated to children aged 3 to 12. In Piazza Dante, every evening, clowns, marionettes, and musical theatre alternate; at the Giardino di Bamboo, theatrical productions and national premieres take the stage.
Alongside the shows, a rich programme of workshops: papier-mâché (in collaboration with the Viareggio Carnival Foundation), calligraphy, wooden games, treasure hunts, astronomical observation, and planting workshops.
The complete day-by-day programme is published on the official website lugliobambino.com.
