Three days in costume in the hamlet of Lugagnano di Sona
In the hamlet of Lugagnano, in the Municipality of Sona (province of Verona), Carnival is a deeply felt tradition symbolized by the masks of Lo Tzigano and La Tzigana. Each year, a local couple is chosen to embody the historic masks and lead the festivities, in a ritual that combines folklore, fun, and solidarity.
The heart of the festival is the grand Sunday parade, with about twenty floats and sixty costumed groups parading through the hamlet's main street. In recent years, the event has also gained international recognition, hosting carnival participants from various European countries, members of the FECC (European Federation of Carnival Cities). Alongside Lo Tzigano, other historic masks from the Veronese area participate.
The Lugagnano Carnival is more than just the parade: the program unfolds over an entire weekend, with a gala dinner on Friday, a children's party on Saturday under the big top, and the parade on Sunday. The event is organized by the "Lo Tzigano" Lugagnano Charity Carnival Association, together with the Parents' Committee and numerous local organizations, with charitable aims.
The 2026 edition of the Lugagnano di Sona Carnival is held from Friday, March 13 to Sunday, March 15. The historic couple of Lo Tzigano is led this year by Bruno Tomezzoli, nicknamed "Tome". The highlight is the grand Sunday parade, which starts at 2 PM from the roundabout at the entrance to the village on Via Beccarie and runs along the hamlet's main street to the tennis tent arena in Mancalacqua. Among the participants are 70 carnival-goers from Germany, Sweden, Belgium, France, Macedonia, Croatia, Serbia, and Slovenia, all members of the FECC.
Participants: Tzigano 2026 Bruno "Tome" Tomezzoli and 70 international carnival-goers from the FECC.
