The widespread exhibition of light sculptures in the historic center of Ruvo di Puglia
Luci e Suoni d'Artista is the major Christmas event of the Municipality of Ruvo di Puglia, in the province of Bari, in the heart of Puglia. This is not your typical festive lighting display, but a genuine participatory public art project, established in the city in 2016 under the artistic direction of Vittorio Palumbo. Every year, between December and January, the ancient core of the town turns into an open-air widespread exhibition, where hundreds of light sculptures create a path of wonder through the squares, avenues, and alleys of the historic center.
The heart of the event is an itinerary that starts from Piazza Matteotti and winds through the historic center, touching Piazza Menotti Garibaldi, Piazza Bovio, Piazza Dante, Largo Cattedrale, and the streets of Via De Gasperi, Via Vittorio Veneto, and Via Cattedrale. Over the course of its editions, the project has produced over three hundred and fifty light works, all handcrafted by citizens within community workshops. Among the most beloved installations are:
The very name of the festival combines lights and sounds: the inaugural lighting is always accompanied by performances, luminous parades, and live concerts involving local schools, bands, and artists. The installations are surrounded by musical, creative writing, and participatory construction workshops, as well as craft markets and guided tours of the city's treasures, from the Jatta Museum to the Aragonese Tower, and from Underground Ruvo to Palazzo Spada.
Co-financed by the Municipality of Ruvo di Puglia and the Puglia Region, the project is much more than an event: it is a laboratory of social innovation and cultural welfare that involves hundreds of people every year in the design and creation of the works. The installations are not purchased but created by the community, in a process that intertwines contemporary art, social inclusion, and the enhancement of urban heritage. Coordination is entrusted to the Bembè Scuola delle Arti Musicali e Performative APS, with a broad partnership of local associations, cooperatives, and schools.
Visiting Ruvo di Puglia during Luci e Suoni d'Artista means discovering one of the most evocative villages in the Terra di Bari in a new light, wrapped in the glow of handcrafted sculptures. It is an experience suitable for families, art enthusiasts, and those looking for a different kind of Christmas, capable of combining tradition, contemporary creativity, and a sense of community.
The tenth edition of Luci e Suoni d'Artista took place in Ruvo di Puglia from December 12, 2025, to January 12, 2026, centered on the theme 'Con-vivere, abitare insieme il pianeta', dedicated to collaboration and public spaces as places of connection.
The lighting ceremony was held on December 12 in Piazza Matteotti: at 6:00 PM, the performance 'Suoni, parole e movimento' featured Michele Marzella on trombone and Tibetan trumpet, a narrative intervention by Lello Tedeschi with the Patabulare group, and the luminous parade 'In delirio con Bembè' open to children, schools, and citizens. At 8:00 PM, the free concert 'Acoustic World' by Enzo Avitabile took place, organized by Bass Culture - Talos Festival. From 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM, the craft markets 'Ai margini dell'evento' were held with Pro Loco UNPLI and La Puglia in Piazza.
Along the historic center route, installations created over the ten editions returned to shine: the nest with bird mobiles, the butterflies of Via De Gasperi, the dreamcatchers, the tightrope walkers, the rose window, and the fantastic animals. To complete the program, co-design workshops with about one hundred participants, musical workshops with schools, and creative writing sessions were held.
Ruvo di Puglia is located in the province of Bari, along the route to Andria. By car, it can be reached via the SS16 bis and the A14 motorway (Molfetta or Trani-Andria-Barletta exits). By train, the city is served by the Bari-Barletta line of the Ferrovie del Nord Barese, with a station just a short walk from the historic center.
The event takes place during the Christmas period, from the lighting ceremony in mid-December until mid-January. The installations are visible every evening along the historic center route.
The widespread exhibition of light sculptures is free and open to the public. Some guided tours and side activities may require a reservation.
